Would you eat this or bin it?

Posting here for traffic and quick responses/opinions. I've discovered a cheese selection (unopened) from last Christmas in the depths of the freezer. Would you defrost and eat? Or bin?

Defrost and check the quality. It won't be harmful due to the freezing but the texture of the cheese may have been compromised

user1498854363 · 22/12/2018 08:20

Does it have any info on storage/ best before date?

Urbanbeetler · 22/12/2018 08:21

I’d use it for cooking

i didn't know you could freeze cheese!!!

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/12/2018 08:23

Bin. I didn't know you could freeze cheese though. Can you? I just wouldn't fancy it.

Bluesheep8 · 22/12/2018 08:23

Storage instruction is "keep refrigerated" best before is 12th Jan (as in Jan 2018) I think my instinct is to bin it and buy another!

Yes I've frozen cheese before and it's been fine.

I'd leave it in the freezeruntil after Christmas and use for cooking.

azulmariposa · 22/12/2018 08:32

You can freeze cheese??? Why did I not know this???

Bluesheep8 · 22/12/2018 08:34

It doesn't say in the label that you can, but I've frozen it for years and it's always been fine. I know someone who freezes milk with no problem too!

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 22/12/2018 08:41

You can freeze cheese, you can freeze the blocks of Cathedral City so it's probably no different if they are hard cheeses.

BiscuitDrama · 22/12/2018 08:43

Might go a bit crumbly, but it’ll be fine.

justforareply · 22/12/2018 08:52

It'll be fine to eat but I'd leave it for cooking with

RandomUsernameHere · 22/12/2018 09:06

As far as I know you can freeze things for as long as you want without them becoming unsafe to eat. The quality might be affected though.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 22/12/2018 09:06

I find cheese goes very crumbly after freezing so don't generally do it, but as long as it tastes fine after defrosting I would eat it

RandomUsernameHere · 22/12/2018 09:08

OP yes you can freeze milk no problem! I usually keep a spare one in the freezer.

XmasHolly · 22/12/2018 09:13

Defrost it and see. The texture will be different but it might taste ok.

If in doubt, feed it to the birds. They love cheese!

azulmariposa · 22/12/2018 09:27

I don't think that cheese lasts long enough in my house to actually go in the freezer! But I'll definitely remember that you can!

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/12/2018 09:29

I would be very wary. Freezing only slows down the deterioration of food, it doesn't stop the process.

cushioncovers · 22/12/2018 09:39

Bin it

longwayoff · 22/12/2018 09:52

Texture might change a bit as it defrosts but otherwise will be fine

hedgehoglurker · 22/12/2018 10:14

If texture is crumbly, you can use for cooking. Definitely no need to bin it.

Bluesheep8 · 22/12/2018 10:16

Not going to eat it. Thank you for all your helpful replies. And special thanks to the poster who suggested putting it out for the birds. Genius! So pleased that it won't go to waste and the fat will be good for them at this time of year. But I will have to make sure my greedy blue cat is firmly indoors as he is a cheese fiend.

Missingstreetlife · 22/12/2018 10:17

Probably ok, you can eat cheese with mood anyway.
Use it quick once defrosted
