Present for 8 year old NOT into girly things

Bosses Dd age 8 isn't into anything girly I.e no idea what a LOL doll is and doesn't play with girly things.

She's a lovely little thing that loves Lego, dinosaurs, science etc and dressing up as Batman/superman etc

I want to get her a gift for Xmas but totally stuck as I only have girly girls to buy for plus I also don't know what she would have in respect of toys etc, any ideas that is easy to pick up as ordering isn't a option now

I brought my tom boy niece a nerf gun and targets and it was very well received.

Playmobil?
Lego (not the pink stuff)

What about a magic kit? I've seen lots for age 8+

Naughty1205 · 21/12/2018 20:08

Haven't read full thread but have dd same and she's getting a telescope and a drone (!) as part of her gifts. Oh and walkie talkies. None of them were too expensive

Kpo58 · 21/12/2018 20:13

Roboralley board game.

MadameJosephine · 21/12/2018 20:16

Galt science kits are good. DD is getting the rainbow lab and the magnetic lab for christmas. They’re about £12-15 and you can get them in Waterstones. They have Science museum kits which are great too

She got K’nex for her birthday and loves it.

Books? DD loves this one

For God’s Sake a girl isn’t in to dolls and you can’t think of a single present that would suit her?

Perhaps stop thinking being a girl means liking ‘frivolous’ things as a start

LonelyandTiredandLow · 21/12/2018 20:29

Board games always work well at Christmas. Some nice science kits by GALT too.

datingloon · 21/12/2018 20:37

Gimmeesugar wind your neck in... you didn't even have to reply! Yes I did want help because absolutely everything my children would like she wouldn't and I know for a fact that the toys she likes and her interest are things my girls would hate too.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice I've settled on a slime making kit and will also pick up a book and selection box tomorrow when out shopping.

Will def try and find out a bit more about her interests in Lego ready for her birthday

@datingloon I did feel i had to reply because, having a little girl myself, I want to try and tackle sexism and misogyny wherever I see it. I appreciate you’re not meaning to be either of those things but perpetuating these myths about what our girls are supposed to like does unfortunately do so.

SylvanianFrenemies · 22/12/2018 12:04

My DD is a similar age.

Ideas:

Lego City or Harry Potter (if she likes HP)
Chemistry or Magic Set
Robot anything - we have got Robo Chameleon for DD but it might be out of price range.
Crate Creatures (there is a mini one for around £10)
Check if she's into Pokemon - DD is and there's loads of great toys at a range of prices
Another vote for K'Nex
Hex Bugs - we have got DD the glow in the dark set from The Entertainer, it is half price at the moment
Spy and Code themed stuff

The Facebook/website A Mighty Girl often had gift lists that help break down stereotypes of what girls can enjoy.

Yabbers · 22/12/2018 12:39

Gimmesugar

Totally with you on smashing the stereotypes, I'm raising a girl to avoid them too.

But if you have girls who like that stuff (and let's not forget often peers have as much of an influence as parents) the retail market doesn't make it easy to find alternatives. Sometimes you can get away with looking at gifts for boys but that section is full of stuff that non "girly" girls wouldn't be interested in either. I've also found that stuff directed at 8 year old boys tends to be a bit too young for girls, it's a funny age to buy for. So a bit unfair to be harsh on the OP for asking.

Gimmeesugar · 22/12/2018 19:43

It’s just the idea that as she doesn’t know what a LOL doll is (neither do I) then she’s not a real ‘girl’ that I found weird

reallyanotherone · 22/12/2018 19:49

That and the fact th o/p has a family full of girls, has daughters, and every single one of those females only likes stereotypically girly things?

I have two dd’s and they like a whole mix of stuff. Even though i don’t have boys, and there are no boys in my family, there is plenty of stuff one or both my girls like that isn’t “girly” and would do fine for a boy...

Lego
Remote control spider
Colour changing cars
Balls, bouncier the better
Science kits
Rockets

Etc. Etc...
