Would you

a Go and buy a new slow cooker but it's christmas and the shops will be rammed

b Attempt to cook it in the oven

If B, what temp would you set the oven at?

Asking for a friend

Amazon Prime?

Not all shops are rammed today though - I’ve been quite surprised by my local big Tesco and the high street in the part of London I work in generally.

In the oven I’d do it at 120 for five or six hours, if that helps.

I'd boil it personally because I like it better than roasted. Not as greasy.

Bubblysqueak · 21/12/2018 13:58

I was really surprised how quiet lots of the supermarkets were today. Idea risk it and pop into one and grab one.

Simmer first and then roast it to glaze.

Not sure on temp, my fiancé does the ham.

PurpleWithRed · 21/12/2018 13:59

Roast it instead. Quite happily. In the meantime do internet search for that slow cooker that lets you use the casserole bit on the stovetop as well as in the slow cooker. Or check out the InstantPot that everyone raves about on here.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/12/2018 13:59

C - ask around if anyone has a slow cooker they won't be using over Christmas that you could borrow.

Otherwise, go to the shops when they're less rammed. Before 8 am or about half an hour before they close (but not on Sunday unless you're in Scotland - rest of UK's short opening hours means that the shops will be rammed from the second they open until closing time).

I really want to go and get a new slow cooker but I cba with crowds - I wonder how busy it would be first thing tomorrow morning or last thing tonight?

i would slow boil it in a big saucepan the day before for about 3 hours, let it go cold in the fridge over night and then just roast it with foil on top in the oven for an hour and a half with honey glaze over it is delishous

feelliketomhanks · 21/12/2018 14:03

this is the recipe I use

wait till after christmas for buying a new one with sales you will probably get a better one for less money

Glomerulus · 21/12/2018 14:04

Having just made my Christmas ham, I would boil it (30 mins per 1lb/450g) then glaze and roast at 200 degrees for 20 or 30 mins, however long it takes to go all sticky and yummy.

Good luck to your friend Wink

feelliketomhanks · 21/12/2018 14:08

I suppose I could sorry my friend could do it in the oven.

I've never owned a slow cooker. I would look up an oven-cooked ham recipe and follow it.

XmasPostmanBos · 21/12/2018 14:18

Boil in a large pan then finish it off in the oven.

Wilkinson's have some decently priced slowcookers in atm. Just go pick one up.

ChoudeBruxelles · 21/12/2018 14:22

I’ve just cooked a ham. total cooking time 45mjns per kg plus 20 mins. Boil in a bit pot with things like peppercorns and bay leaf then finish off for half an hour in the oven on about 180. I put maple syrup over mine before putting it in the oven.

jq28 · 21/12/2018 14:23

I'd buy a new one they are cheap as chips. Go Asda at 5am lol

BlessYourCottonSocks · 21/12/2018 14:31

I must be slow - but your recipe requires you to slow cook an already cooked ham?

feelliketomhanks · 21/12/2018 14:42

I just buy a ham and use it for the recipe.

SilverySurfer · 21/12/2018 15:46

I cook it in a big saucepan on the hob before putting in the oven but then I loathe the texture and taste of food cooked in a slow cooker.

ChelseaBabbage · 21/12/2018 16:15

If you have a large enough casserole dish then use your oven as a slow cooker. Whack it in at 100C for 6 or 7 hours then remove before you do the potatoes etc.
Those of you who have already cooked your ham - I know it keeps for a while but isn't it a bit early or are you eating it today?

steppemum · 21/12/2018 16:22

Boil it slowly in a saucepan, put somethign under it eg an upturned saucer. Boil for about 2 hours.

Then take it out, and put brown sugar and mustard all over the top. If it has fat, score the fat and put cloves in the scores, and then smear with the brown sugar and mustard.

Then oven roast for about 40 miutes, basting all the time.

I actually slow cooker mine and then honey roast it as above. delicious. In the slow cooker now, we are startign Christmas with it tonight for dinner

ChoudeBruxelles · 21/12/2018 17:12

ChelseaBabbage friends coming tomorrow which is mainly what the ham is for. It’ll get picked at for day after
