Quick question about what age you need varifocals

I keep reading that people's eyes change at around 40-45, but surely it varies between people? Do opticians always tell everyone under 40 that they don't need them, or are there some people who need them in their 30s?

I'm sure it varies. I'm nearsighted, so when I first needed help seeing close up it was straight to varifocals - I was 43. My husband, on the other hand, never had vision problems so started with just reading glasses, but at 39. Now, 52, he's moved on to varifocals to see his computer.

Completely depends...

Most people's eyesight changes between 40 & 50...

Some people will be much younger some people just need reading or distance glasses...

It depends on the individual & probably their prescription too.

I got mine aged 53 after a few years of swapping between my normal glasses and reading glasses. I wish I'd got them sooner, they're amazing. DH is 56 & thinking about getting them now. We are both very short sighted.

I have varifocals and separate VDU glasses, 4 years ago didn't wear glasses at all Sad

I haven't made it beyond 10 months at a time without needing the prescription changing as struggling at work!

It does vary, I'm early 50s, very shortsighted and still don't need them, although there is a bit of long-sightendness creeping in. Single vision glasses are still fine, in contact lenses I have one eye slightly under corrected to compensate.

I've worn glasses all the time for the last 6-7 years. I was struggling earlier this year and thought I needed varifocals sogot retested. I have a very minor alteration in the bottom of the lens to allow me read clearer. The optician described them as "office glasses" but they do have a proper name and I can't think what it is! Im 41.

tectonicplates · 21/12/2018 12:20

@Sforsh49 I used to have something like this that were called "lifestyle lenses" from one optician, but every other optician I've been to has given me a blank stare and had no idea what I was talking about.

I've always been shortsighted but I started getting a little long sighted as well at about 46/47. My glasses are varifocals but I'm still okay with normal contact lenses although I have a cheap pair of reading glasses if required.

I had excellent eyesight until I was about 40 when I noticed that I preferred to read in bright light. I had reading glasses until I was about 50 and have had varifocals since then( on my second set of lenses at 56) . My DH is about 5 years older along this road and soon to get varifocals. My DSis is using reading glasses only at 54.
