Proper Student 'Digs' - do they exist?

I'm of an age where many friends have DC heading off to uni soon (my DC are younger). They've all excitedly been showing me where they hope to live next year - all seem to be modern purpose-built student flats, with private kitchenettes and en suites.
Do proper student 'digs' not exist now? I have fond memories of my student room in a terraced house in my university town, complete with hand basin in the (single) bedroom. Less fond memories of the shared kitchen / fridge.
I was a student in the late 90s / early 00s, so not that long ago.

They do, although our son didn't live in a shared house, some of his friends did. He looked at moving into one with other friends but they decided against it and they stayed in halls for two years and then moved into a shared flat in a private student accommodation building.

A friend's daughter had a dreadful time in the shared house she was in and at one point their house was declared unfit for human habitation and they had to move out while work was done to remedy the situation.

First years are usually in purpose built flats and then shared houses for second/third years

I think of 'digs' as being a room in a landlady's house - where the landlady lived there and cooked for you and imposed the rules. Like my parents boarded in, in the 1950s.
What you are describing sounds more like a shared student house.
Yes, they still exist. My dd is living in one now. My ds lived in 2 different ones in his 2nd and 3rd years. My dns all lived in them.
A lot of halls of Residence have been privatised now and are a lot posher, but the shared hoses of 2nd and 3rd years still exist.
