Does anyone fancy doing Veganuary with me?

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 20/12/2018 21:18

I’ve read “How not to die” the apparent vegan bible.

I’ve ordered a bunch of fruit and veggie boxes for the new year

I’ve armed myself with nut butters, pumpkin seeds and coconut milk.

I’ve watched a bunch of YouTube videos on the evils of intensive meat farming both for the animals and the environment.

I’ve bookmarked dozens of vegan recipes.

I’m ready.

I just need a few mumsnetters to keep me company so we can spur each other on.

Anyone care to join me?

There’s a vegan board with lots of useful advice.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 20/12/2018 21:28

I'm already vegan but feel free to ask for any advice!

Good luck!

Starfish28 · 20/12/2018 21:30

Oooooohhhh I’ve been toying with this for a while. I’ll join you

That sounds like an expensive January.

PurpleDaisies · 20/12/2018 21:33

Vegan doesn’t have to be expensive. Yes, loads of substitutes add up on the bills but if you cook more from scratch, it can be just as cheap as any other diet. You have to be organised though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/12/2018 21:35

I'm in (except I failed last year because of being unable to find a milk that I could tolerate in hot drinks).

rabbitfoodadvocate · 20/12/2018 21:37

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Did you try Oatly? Tends to be most people's fave!

PurpleDaisies · 20/12/2018 21:38

I’m with you remus, the substitute milks are horrid in hot drinks. I only drink black coffee now.

DowntonCrabby · 20/12/2018 21:39

Yes! I managed a couple of weeks in Jan 2016 but my eating habits are at a place now where I hope I’d gone it much easier.

Looking forward to it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/12/2018 21:48

I didn't manage to track any Oatly down last time, but will make that a priority this time. I don't mind black coffee, but can't cope with black tea.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 20/12/2018 22:13

Fab! Glad some MNers are joining me. About the expense, the shop was actually cheaper once I took the meat and fish out.

I ordered a medium veg box from Abel and Cole with some spices. I’ve decided spices are the way to go plus they have lots of anti-oxidants.

The hardest thing will be giving up my hot chocolates. I don’t think any plant based milk froths up as nicely. Perhaps I will need a screensaver of a cow being separated from her young on my phone when I get the urge. Sad

rabbitfoodadvocate · 20/12/2018 22:27

@IfyouseeRitaMoreno Seriously, Oatly Barista makes the best frothy hot choc! I have it in the mornings and DH manages some pretty good wanker latte art with it too.

Believeitornot · 20/12/2018 22:30

I found oatly in rooibus tea an acceptable alternative to breakfast tea with cows milk when I gave up dairy.

I think the best way to go vegan is to not have too many meat or dairy substitutes- fake cheese etc. It’ll just be a constant reminder of life on the other side 🤣🤣

lastqueenofscotland · 20/12/2018 22:33

I’m vegan Full time.
It doesn’t need to be expensive. Smile

Don’t bother with vegan cheese it can fuck off. I like sweetened soya

LaurieFairyCake · 20/12/2018 22:37

Oatly is perfect in hot chocolate. I had it tonight with Fortnums hot chocolate and it was amazing.

I'm not vegan, I'm just trying to eat as much vegan as possible - cow milk to oatly was a very easy swop a few months ago. I loathe all other 'milks' - hate soy milk with a passion, taste makes me gag.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 20/12/2018 22:38

Rabbit you’ve convinced me! I can see they have it at the main supermarkets too. Thanks!

fernandoanddenise · 20/12/2018 22:42

I’ll join!

rabbitfoodadvocate · 20/12/2018 22:42

@lastqueenofscotland I second the motion for vegan cheese to die choking on itself.

We are very well fed vegans and our shop comes to £40 a week. I'm eating like a horse too, with the baby vegan growing in me.

StopTheVeganMadness · 20/12/2018 22:43

What are your main motivations for following a vegan diet for a month?

Is this something you intend to continue beyond January?

ignore my username

sweetkitty · 20/12/2018 22:46

I’m vegan already as well. I use sweetened soya milk in tea prefer it to cows milk as it was too creamy for me.

I’m not craving cheese as much as I was now. Vegan cheese is mostly disgusting. Chocolate is my downfall, oh for the want of a vegan Galaxy, Vego comes close but it’s £2 and not in a supermarket.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 20/12/2018 22:47

Welcome fernando! Right. I will try to keep everyone’s spirits up by finding interesting links, recipes, etc.

This is one I’ve been using for years, not for vegan purposes but because it’s delicious. I do love a good lentil soup.

Also a fan of Oatly Barista but have recently discovered Alpro Cashew milk which is lovely in hot drinks and great for making a creamy white sauce.

reindeermania · 21/12/2018 07:47

I'll join having failed last year -followed a recipe for vegan mac and cheese that included almond milk and vegan-cheese in other words I followed a recipe for marzipan vomit-

Stop the madness- to be honest my motivation isn't ethical but rather selfish- after the extreme excess of December I like the idea of balancing that with an extremely healthy jan. plus a nice focus to enjoy through the traditionally miserable January

PurpleDaisies · 21/12/2018 07:52

I like the idea of balancing that with an extremely healthy jan.

I don’t think a vegan diet is necessarily any healthier than other diets. It’s quite easy to let it get very carb heavy and there’s plenty of junk food that’s vegan.
