WTF - guess what I have been quoted (ballpark figures) for new en suite?

So I have a small en suite I haven’t used for years- largely because a) I prefer baths, b) the shower has only a feeble spray, and c) it’s an avocado suite!

Went to John Lewis for their fitted bathroom service. Happy to pay a bit more for a one stop shop with ongoing guarantees on workmanship and products, design of en suite and overall convenience.

So would be looking at completely new shower room (not a wet room)as follows:

  • new shower + electric pump to get water pressure up (both shower head and hose part)
  • washbasin
  • toilet
  • cabinet with inbuilt socket
  • floor and wall tiling throughout.

Work would probably take around 2 weeks.

MincePieMum · 19/12/2018 09:29

6k?

babysharkah · 19/12/2018 09:30

5k, possibly more for two weeks work

SillyMoomin · 19/12/2018 09:31

I'd suggest that would be between £4500-6000 of work- but as you're WTF'ing, I'm going to suggest they've quoted over £10k??

CrunchieFriday · 19/12/2018 09:31

I got quoted nearly £15K for a downstairs loo and washbasin recently. Apparently the tiling and carpentry to box in the pipework would be extra, too!!

Whifty · 19/12/2018 09:31

I have been quoted over 10k recently for similar from a local bathroom firm.

Aridane · 19/12/2018 09:32

OK - £13,000 - £15,000!

OP posts:
Burlea · 19/12/2018 09:33

20k

MilkyCuppa · 19/12/2018 09:33

I reckon around £3-4k all inclusive. You could probably reduce that by maybe £1k if you go via a plumber instead.

SylviaAndSydney · 19/12/2018 09:33

Bloody hell Xmas Shock

redsummershoes · 19/12/2018 09:33

just the labour is a grand alone (assuming 10 days at just over nmw).
plus materials & fittings another grand or more.
plus mark up = anything between 3.5-5k

itsboiledeggsagain · 19/12/2018 09:33

John Lewis though. You can get a one stop service from elsewhere

MazDazzle · 19/12/2018 09:34

£6K. Maybe more since it’s John Lewis.

Labour is roughly £1K per week per person, so it soon adds up.

Whifty · 19/12/2018 09:34

That is very steep. Ours is a lot but involves moving pipework around and a new door. Look at a local company who will also do who whole thing.

MazDazzle · 19/12/2018 09:35

£13-£15?!

I’ve had 2 bathrooms done recently and they were no where near that!

redsummershoes · 19/12/2018 09:35

Shock that's a big mark up they are taking

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 19/12/2018 09:36

That's a lot! Ridiculously expensive in fact. I'd look elsewhere.

Hoppinggreen · 19/12/2018 09:37

ours was £5k with the bath alone costing £1k

Chewbecca · 19/12/2018 09:38

I think my current bathroom will have to see me for the next 40 years if that's now the going rate.
I always think of household costs in terms of how many holidays or amazing meals that money could buy. The holidays would always win v bathroom at that price.

heartshapedknob · 19/12/2018 09:41

That’s typical John Lewis though isn’t it? I know they price match on retail goods but very much market themselves as the department store for the well off!

FreezerBird · 19/12/2018 09:41

We've been quoted 6k to do ours. However it will include a lot of rectifying ridiculous DIY done by the previous owner and repairs before getting on to the new stuff.

It's at the top end of what we were expecting, but we know the guy, have used him before and his work is of really high quality. The shoddy ensuite has been a nightmare for the six years we've lived here and I'm happy to pay given that I am confident he'll sort it. If he doesn't, I know where he lives!

What's more galling is the £££ we've already paid out to various shysters who have failed to sort it thus far.

AutumnCrow · 19/12/2018 09:42

I wouldn't touch John Lewis with a bargepole since their customer services went down the tubes.

And yes, that's a ridiculous quote. It shouldn't take that long to do, for a start.
