I think I've started a trend...!

Totally light hearted 🛴

Back in the summer I asked for & was given a scooter for my birthday - an adult sized 2 wheeled version of the scooters a lot of kids have. I used it to do the school run (scoot) and found it really good fun, a bit of exercise & a fast way to get to & from school.
Since then 4 other sets of parents in my son's class alone have bought similar scooters!
I think I've started a trend at school...!
Have you ever inadvertently started a trend?

I don’t think I have but you’ve made me want a scooter for the nursery run Xmas Angry

Shirleyphallus · 19/12/2018 09:29

People near where I work use them to get to work and they look like right idiots. Walking is much better exercise too!

SylviaAndSydney · 19/12/2018 09:32

Aah, faster though Shirley...

MrsEricBana · 19/12/2018 09:35

The only thing I noticed was when ds was young I'd sometimes use made up words in conversation with a particular mum and I noticed she'd start using them. It's also interesting with teens how one of them starts using a word then it becomes a thing.
The scooter sounds fun!

Believeitornot · 19/12/2018 09:38

I find them bloody annoying even more so when I have to dodge adults pelting along on a scooter.

Chewbecca · 19/12/2018 09:40

I wanted one for the walk part of my commute (25 mins after 50 mins on train). My friend and DH have both said a big fat No because a) I will look an idiot (who cares?!) and b) DH fears I will get into a tussle with vehicles and come off much worse.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 19/12/2018 09:41

I agree they are totally inappropriate to use on busy pavements - I get off & walk (push) if the area is too busy to scoot responsibly.
But it is so much fun and I live. It caring that I look a bit silly!

* * I love not caring

It does sound like good fun. I've scooted on dcs scooters before on the way to pick them up and it does save a lot of time.

Sitranced · 19/12/2018 09:55

I love the idea of them and I had one years ago to use in my commute but pavements are just so full of cracks and pot holes that its makes for an uncomfortable ride on those tiny plastic wheels. I'll stick to a bike with pneumatic tyres.

DryAsThingysFootwear · 19/12/2018 10:02

I raise the handlebars on my son's to scoot home from school (why do people carry them?). Getting your own is such a good idea!

Holly2017 · 19/12/2018 10:04

Plenty of adults use scooters. I think they look ridiculous doing so but each to their own

Yohooo · 19/12/2018 10:33

I see people using them and I don't think they look silly. Years ago I had one with big pneumatic tyres that fitted me and a kid on it. It was amazing - we had a long walk to school a lot of which was down hill. It was fantastic.
I'd still use one if it saved me lots of time. I'd find it really sad if someone didn't use one when they wanted to because they would be afraid of looking silly.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 19/12/2018 10:52

They are great. I wish I had one. I take DS to our local Decathlon and try out their scooters. I wouldn't care about looking silly, I'd be having too much fun!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 19/12/2018 11:06

We came down Table Mountain on giant scooters. Scooting is brilliant : )

Delatron · 19/12/2018 12:27

Last Christmas my DH bought me the most amazing adult scooter, no plastic tyres, proper ones. It’s very cool! I felt self conscious the first day but love it now. I use it to keep up with the kids on the school run on their scooters/bikes. Then I whizz back home in half the time.

We have good pavements and it’s very quiet.

CmdrIvanova · 19/12/2018 12:29

An old colleague of mine had a scooter to get her between the train station and our work building. The station was a long walk away and we started very early, so it was a great idea. She used to let us have a go on it in the locker room :)

hippoherostandinghere · 19/12/2018 13:32

DD fell off hers and broke her femur, so I won't be joining your trend any time soon and neither will she! Anyway I'm much too self conscious to use a scooter.

Delatron · 19/12/2018 17:56

Sorry to hear that hippo. They can be dangerous, I fell over the wheel of mine the first day I used it (felt self conscious anyway!), I was crossing the road so not even on it, tried to grab on to my son (😬) to steady myself and pushed him in a puddle. Right in front of a crowd at the school gates. People were aghast at me!

Nothing can top that so I don’t feel the slightest bit self conscious anymore. Plus lots of adults have them round here.

Blackladybug · 19/12/2018 18:08

There's a woman on our old estate who must have been about 60, long dark grey hair and she was always scooting around. Thought she was bloody brilliant!!

Jackshouse · 19/12/2018 18:09

Very popular in Paris apparently .

Not allowed on the pavements though. Do you put your children on the road?
