Where do I want to live?

In a few years I will be qualified in my specialist area and looking for a job. Every area needs what I do, though for convenience I would have to be near a major administrative centre or large-ish city/county town, say 30 - 45 minute commute. I have 2 DC so need good schools (senior and possibly junior depending on timing. They are currently in the independent sector). Ideally I would like to look for a job in an area where I can afford a bit of space, where we are right now is really expensive. Coastal would be nice, but not necessary. Needs to have lots of outdoor opportunities for the children. Housing budget say £500K?

I'm not from UK so don't know much about areas other than where I live. Would love some suggestions for places I might want to look. Thanks very much!

Tell me more about Cheshire?

It's a beautiful place to live. Loads of gorgeous countryside, delamere forest, near the beaches of north wales and the Wirral. Near to airports and cities. I love Chester and its history (and cafes, bars and restaurants). Transport is ok.

I left to go to University in London and came home to raise my child.
Any specific questions?

I am on the coast in West Sussex. Near enough to Brighton for a days shopping but not so close as I have to put up with the summer crowds. 45 minutes to Gatwick. Loads of outdoor activities everything from sailing to horse riding. Choice between walks on the beach or the Sussex downs. Good rail links as long as southern rail are not on strike. Good schools either state or private.
£500k would get you a decent 4 bed

Somewhere around Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield or Liverpool.

Just about everything you need really and your budget would get you a great house.

I would second East Lothian or the Scottish Borders - new train line into Edinburgh, airport handy, loads of great independent and local schools very reasonable property prices, beautiful countryside and a fantastic city on your door step.

Yorkshire. Plenty of outdoor stuff and you'd get a good property for 500k. North of Leeds is near the Dales. Sheffield has the Peak District and you also have the north Yorkshire coast/York etc.

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/12/2018 20:32

Airport near Leeds and Manchester airport is reasonably close too

Wixams near Bedford. Private schools in Bedford, and not that far from the M1 down to Luton airport. Close to countryside as well.

Is it an NHS job? They all say Welsh speakers ...but it's not a barrier (honestly). The Gower is lovely...

Another vote for Northumberland, beautiful scenery, coast and countryside, vibrant cities, airport, property reasonably priced compared to the South. I would move there if I could, maybe one day.

I've never lived in the UK but have visited lots and I think Edinburgh or close by would be an amazing place to live.

RaininSummer · 19/12/2018 21:03

You could get coastal, city and airport in Devon if you lived near enough to Exeter for airport.

stoplickingthetelly · 19/12/2018 21:19

As others have said somewhere between Manchester and Liverpool would be great for you. Loads of nice places in Cheshire e.g Croft and surrounding areas. Or possibly further towards Altrincham such as Mobberley. Or could go slightly further north of Liverpool like Aughton/Ormskirk or Formby. Think the North west generally has a lot of what you're looking for.

SciFiScream · 19/12/2018 21:28

Another vote for East Lothian. Excellent place to live and you can get into Edinburgh in about 15 minutes (depending where you live on the train line).

Lazybonita · 19/12/2018 21:36

I can recommend North Berwick in East Lothian just outside Edinburgh. It’s a really great place to grow up. Fabulous little town with loads going on, right on the beach and Edinburgh is a wonderful. I now live on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, it has not got the same level of culture and stuff going on but the weather is better and the beaches are fabulous and the people are lovely. Also, you can get a lot of house for your money compared to most places, including East Lothian. We have a small holding for the cost of a semi in the south east.

Coastal + near city + airport = Wirral. We had exactly the same needs and love it here.

Longhairmightcare · 19/12/2018 21:55

Have a look at Wirral. It meets all your criteria incl airport, has some excellent schools and benefits from coastal areas and green space.
You'd want to be looking at West or South Wirral (broadly speaking).
