Imagine having a sudden problem with dairy and not being able to have the good stuff.

I take lactase tablets when I eat dairy and it’s normally fine

heather1 · 18/12/2018 21:57

Yup, it’s a pain. Got mine after a bad tummy bug. I was advised to go cold Turkey for 6 weeks. Then very slowly try again. I can now tolerate Greek yoghurt, some cheese but not milk or Baileys.

Gingermuffin · 18/12/2018 22:17

I don’t have to imagine, I’m right there with you. I think I’ve always had it to some extent as milk and some ice creams and stuff have always made me feel not quite right. Recently though not quite right has turned into flipping awful and it’s extended to cheese too Sad

Hofuckingho · 18/12/2018 22:19

Lactose free milk is fine. Lactose tablets when dairy cannot be avoided. It really isn’t a problem.

BanjoStarz · 18/12/2018 23:12

Total thread hijack - do the lactase tablets really work?

I’m another sudden lactose intolerant after an horrific bout of food poisoning earlier in the year.

I’ve pretty much accepted it but have been thinking longingly of Xmas cheese boards 🙄

Hobbes8 · 18/12/2018 23:14

heather1 you know there's an almond milk baileys now? Or I believe m&s do something similar.

I'm afraid I can't help with the cheese though.

Racecardriver · 18/12/2018 23:20

Have you tried goats dairy? My father can’t tollerate anything made from cows milk but goats milk is fine for yoghurt and cheese.

stabulous · 18/12/2018 23:26

Happened to me last year. I take a lactase enzyme so I can still eat cheese. I use Oatly for milk stuff.

Raggedyaine · 18/12/2018 23:31

My daughter has been lactose intolerant for years. She uses almond milk for cereal. I use almond or oat milk for white sauces, nutritional yeast instead of cheese in cooking and soya ice cream.

Inkspellme · 18/12/2018 23:40

Can I recommend Lidl sorbets - a nice replacement for ice cream.

Look out for any food marked vegan as it’s dairy free and is a handy way to ensure there’s no lactose there.

Goats cheese is very tasty.

My lactose intolerant son tolerates buffalo mozzarella cheese too.

You get used to it and the change of diet becomes a habit.

Youmatter · 18/12/2018 23:52

I just love cheese. Total queen of cheese. And I drool over pizza and that cheese pull

We’re lactose intolerant because we’re not baby cows! We are meant to stop producing lactate when we wean from human breast milk. This is why if we have a period without dairy we ‘become’ intolerant.

BaronessBomburst · 19/12/2018 00:03

Lactose breaks down with age. Soft cheese and young cheeses are best avoided. A mature cheddar or aged Gouda, Grand Padano etc will all be lactose free.
Trouble is, you may also be allergic to cow's milk protein.
Then you're screwed.

ArcheryAnnie · 19/12/2018 00:08

Ben and Jerrys now do dairy free versions, fairly widely available, and all of a sudden I can see the point of ice cream.

Halo Top also do a dairy free tub - it's peanut butter cup, and is pretty good.

PeroniZuchini · 19/12/2018 00:12

My poor dh has been for about three years now. He feels dreadful whenever he eats anything with cow’s milk. He was just saying this evening that it’s particularly torturous at this time of year; he’s longing for a big slab of Stilton!

stabulous · 19/12/2018 00:20

It's really easy to still eat dairy with lactose intolerance, it's really not the end of the world:

Hofuckingho · 19/12/2018 07:06

I’ve found that I can eat harder cheeses. The science says that the harder the cheese the less lactose remains. I’m fine with cheddar.

Hofuckingho · 19/12/2018 07:08

I take Holland and Barrett lactase tablets when I really need to. I love cheesecake! The only thing is, I need to take more than the directions suggest. By playing around, you will find the right amount to take.

I find this too. I can also eat live natural yoghurt. or flavoured live, natural yoghurts which only have fruit and sugar added. I’m one of Longley Farms best customers!

Redcherries · 19/12/2018 07:25

Lactofree brand milk etc is brilliant, slightly creamier but tastes like milk or the products your replacing. Even my villages little shop stocks it.

I’m crohns (mild) ibs and severe reflux and lactose intolerance comes and goes, I have to be careful when eating out, more so if traveling.
