Show and tell at school what toy for 7 year old?

Might seem an odd question, but could you let me know what your 6/7 year old would take in if they could take a none electronic toy to school?

My nearly 7 yr old has asd. He desperately wants to fit in at school but was laughed at the last time he took something in!!

Any advice? He has plenty of toys but doesn’t want to be called babyish again (fwiw the toy he took last time wasn’t babyish I don’t think).
Please help what would your 6/7 year old choose?

Tia

Oh god, your poor son :( Kids can be so cruel. It depends what he has though. Does he have anything of the popular current toy brands or games for that age group?

MiddlingMum · 18/12/2018 15:15

Lego?

Beyblades and hexbugs are the big things amongst the 6-8 yr old boys I know.

DS was exceptionally talented with a rubik's pyramid. He took in that, let the class mess it up, and solved it.
We have also taken in none toy things - a certificate earnt at the weekend, a swimming medal (for entering, not necessarily winning), random stuff found on the back (squid middles most recently), and a picture of the feral kittens who turned up on our doorstep every night for food.

Anything none toy that he has?

Something he made with Lego

Whydididothatfuckingthing · 18/12/2018 15:36

Thanks for your help so far!
His motor skills aren’t great so although he has Lego he can’t do it so gives up.
He mainly likes pirates, dinosaurs, robots (all electronic) plants verses Zombies game, nerf guns(not for school) ghostbusters. He does have the marvel action figures and batman cars etc, playing roblox.
I have got him some hexbugs for Christmas, maybe I should unwrap and give now?
Thanks hotinwinter - they have stipulated a toy this time it’s supposed to be a treat but is causing him more stress!
Any thoughts on what he has, or other ideas?
Thanks again

If you unwrapped a hex bug, would he be able to talk about it? Or since it's so new, will he not be able to talk about it, giving rise to issues?
Personally, I think all those things are ok for his age. What did he take last time that caused a problem?
Can he take in a bullet for the nerf gun, and talk around it?

Whydididothatfuckingthing · 18/12/2018 15:57

Thanks you are right, they are electronic anyway aren’t they!
He took a soft toy plant and zombie from the plants vs zombie game.

He has to give a short talk and they get to play with them afterwards so may get bored with a nerf bullet 😀. But great idea thanks, just hate to see him stressing over this.
I don’t think he plays with stuff particularly babyish though so I am a bit stumped.

I have a 6 year old boy with ASD.

Things he has taken in:

books (especially related to topic work)
a craft item he has made (various and of varying success - he will literally use anything to make a new thing - the last thing he made was a rainbow ice lolly machine out of a shoebox and various hits of coloured paper - inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate factory)

Various hot wheels cars
Anything Lego ( especially ninjago) that he can convince me to take in

A cuddly elf toy he wanted to show his friend

As far as I know he hasn’t been specifically picked on for his stuff being too babyish. There have been comments about a few of them, but more to do with general one-up-man-ship (here’s always someone with a cooler hot wheels/better super hero/etc) than related to his ASD, I think.

My ds, also 7. Has taken in a Pokemon card, a Lego build, a conker, a pair of swimming goggles (?!), a giant leaf he found on a walk, a chrysalis, a smiggles pen shaped like a chocolate bar and a fossil. Also a photo of a giant slow worm we found in the garden (not the actual worm!). He chooses himself and sometimes they are very random, but usually something to do with what he has done that weekend. I don’t have much input- but he can always talk about it if he chooses himself. Maybe steer clear of toys and just let him choose ‘stuff’?!

HotInWinter · 18/12/2018 18:08

In which case I'd take the marvel figures or batman stuff. Maybe have a chat about what sort of things he could say. I'm wondering if it was his words rather than the item for the plants vs zombies? Cant see why that would be babyish - my 9 yr old plays it with our 11 yr old neighbour (and even my DH plays the game).

I don't think hex bugs class as electronics - certainly for us electronics mean tablets/ computers / phones rather than stuff with a battery and circuit board. But if he is a rule follower, I can see he might feel uncomfortable.

Good Luck - when is the item to go to school?
