Rejected for more senior role, but just saw they have a jr role available

Thursday I had a great interview, they called me a great candidate and what not.
This was the feedback:
We have now come to a decision and I’m sorry to say that we decided to appoint another applicant. It was a tough decision to make. It was clear that you had loads of great experience to bring to the role, and that you would be a strong addition to the team. But we had to base the decision on our understanding of the role, and another applicant had work experience that was more closely aligned to the day to day elements of the AM role that we couldn’t ignore that.

Would it be silly to ask to be considered for the jr role? I was going to email back.
saying that I really loved them as an agency and really saw myself working there.

From the interview and my experience (I used to have a Sr role) so even the other role was a "downgrade", obviously I don't think that as otherwise I wouldn't have applied. the difference in salary is £4k.

What does MN think?

Go for it! I took a more junior role as we were moving cities where my reputation wasn’t as well known, I was back in the same level position within a year as I proved myself and they moved me up.

No harm trying if you really want to work there, though I would wonder why they had more positions available-is it for a new project etc

No harm in trying.
I've interviewed for a more senior role before, been told I didn't have enough experience and been given a more junior role before.

My only concern is.. wouldn't she have told me about it?? But I know I have already been rejected so.I have nothing else to lose.

It depends, maybe they thought you wouldn’t be interested in the junior role.

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2018 07:47

Nothing ventured nothing gained, as you yourself said, what have you got to lose?

CarolineForbes · 18/12/2018 07:48

I did something similar OP for an internal role. They were really pleased I would consider the other role (which I’m now in) and said they don’t see why I won’t be in the more senior role before long as this role will give me the experience the other candidates had.
I believe I made the right decision as I knew I’d enjoy the work and the team environment, so if you’re feeling the same then go for it!

CarolineForbes · 18/12/2018 07:51

Just seen your next post Op - in my case they didn’t offer the role as they assumed I wouldn’t want to go the next level down. They were really pleased I was interested and I’m actually earning 2k more than my old job anyway!

Needadoughnut · 18/12/2018 07:53

Thanks @Caroline that's what I assume. In the interview she called be a "strong" candidate. And before I noticed this new role I swore I was second best.
