2m kilos of cheese!

topcat2014 · 17/12/2018 21:46

Apparently 2 million kilos of cheese will be thrown away over Christmas?

How is that even possible? I am fairly sure I have never thrown any cheese away - I didn't know you could?

Now, sprouts I can understand :)

I'll help eat it too! I could do 1m kg in a decent weekend!

to add to the Wensleydale with cranberries controversy, has anyone had white stilton with pear and ginger? It's amazing!

YeOldeTrout · 18/12/2018 04:23

Nation of philistines!

2m kilos of cheese!
BarbaraofSevillle · 18/12/2018 06:59

What a travesty. Probably either people who buy one of the cheeseboard muultipacks that the shops are full of at this type of year, and then realise that they don't like blue cheese or the cranberry one, or stupid people who unthinkingly follow use by dates.

Cheese has been stored for months prior to sale so is fine for at least a week or two after the date, probably more. Brie type cheese sold in the UK isn't usually even ripe by the use by date FFS.

The cheeseboards look nice but it's probably cheaper and less wasteful to just buy packs of cheese of the type you do like.

Flashingbeacon · 18/12/2018 10:51

I honestly could go vegan tomorrow if it wasn’t for cheese. I am the particularly fussed on meat and there’s alternatives to everything. But cheese is the best. There’s not much that isn’t improved with a nice bit cheese. Not hard to imagine it’s addictive actually Blush

Youmatter · 18/12/2018 11:16

Now I want cheese!

But what kind? Maybe some cheddar grilled on wheaten bread topped with crunchy tobacco onions.

Or that cheese with chives in with crackers.

Orrrrrrrr a big dirty burger with spinach mostly for decoration, raw onion, fried mushrooms covered in cheese and dipped in pepper sauce like it’s soup.

I’m pmsing. The ultimate porker

Bowchicawowow · 18/12/2018 11:19

There is so much you can make with cheese. It’s odd that people throw it away.

Timeforabiscuit · 18/12/2018 11:23

Well I feel better! I dont have a dishwasher, use plastic packaging and there's no room for a compost bin BUT at least this household eats its cheese*!

*unless somebody has gifted edam - noone's touching that

thegreatbeyond · 18/12/2018 11:52

Anyone who doesn't want their cranberry Wensleydale should email it to me, plzthx

KindergartenKop · 18/12/2018 13:20

It's definitely wensleydale. I made a positive choice this year to swap the 'cheese board' for two big chunks of Stilton because that's really why I buy the cheeseboard!

Strugglingtodomybest · 18/12/2018 13:33

We use our leftovers to make the best ever "4" (pfft!) Cheese pizzas.

wonkylegs · 18/12/2018 13:46

We literally have 29 different cheeses in our fridge at the moment and I can guarantee none of it will go to waste.
A small amount of the massive half Stilton may however get frozen for cooking.

We never throw away cheese except for the very weird Norwegian cheese we once bought to see what it was like but I refuse to countenance that it was actually cheese not wood filler.

AornisHades · 18/12/2018 13:58

Definitely the people who bought pre-packaged cheese boards or other 'port and cheese' type gifts.
Red Leicester cheese is the one I won't have in the house and my cheese tastes run from the stinkiest blue cheese to Kraft Singles Blush

bellinibobble · 18/12/2018 14:01

I am still sadder than I should be about getting a cheese advent calendar this year and it being horrible, plasticky cheese.

Will admit.. some of it has gone in the bin.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/12/2018 14:10

That cheese advent calendar is the biggest swizz ever. So many delicious and interesting varieties of cheese out there and all they can come up with is 4 or 5 of the dullest, most pedestrian cheeses available.

They could probably find 24 different kinds of cheddar, or British cheeses, or any other category of cheese, without even trying that hard.

PinkHeart5914 · 18/12/2018 14:16

Agree it’s probably these Christmas selection packs all supermarkets are selling at the moment, if people just got the ones they actually liked instead of these packs would be less waste.

Also cheese with cranberries and apricots, people buy it for the cheeseboard because it’s Christmas and you know pretty cheese but nobody ever likes it!

Doonewanker · 18/12/2018 14:44

Because some utter fools don't wrap it up properly or seal the pack etc after they've opened the cheese. Almost every time I go into my MIL's fridge there's a new horrible dry slab of cheddar in there that's just been left open to die. I could cry every time I see it.

VelociraptorRex · 18/12/2018 14:55

Ooh @Strugglingtodomybest 4 cheese pizza, what a good idea

But seriously, who has leftover cheese? That's like leftover wine in this house, about as common as unicorn poo Grin

TheDogsMother · 18/12/2018 15:33

Don't throw it away, I'll have it Grin

Seriously though, there are a million ways to use it. Or freeze it. Even feed the birds with it, don't just throw it away. In a world where we can make cheese straws why would we throw away cheese ?

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2018 15:41

Cheese I've bought for myself would never be wasted but im quite fussy with cheese so if it was fancy cheese on a cheese board or in a hamper it would either get given away or chucked. I only really like cheddar.

MotherWol · 18/12/2018 15:42

Having watched a lot of those shows where Gregg Wallace snoops into people's fridges, I have learned that there are people who just routinely sweep the contents of their fridge into the bin, either because it's past dates or because they don't fancy it any more. Why they bought food they weren't going to eat is beyond me. People seem to go a bit mad with the idea of doing a big Christmas shop when the shops are only closed for two days.

The only leftover cheese in our house is when someone's put back a tiny amount of something off a cheeseboard that should have really been eaten at the time, and it's too small to be much use to anyone.

wonkylegs · 18/12/2018 16:05

I did DH a cheese and beer advent calendar myself this year (hence the no of different awesome cheeses in our fridge)
I just bought different ones for him to try and wrapped them with a number in a box in the fridge (checking dates were ok) I did beer one day cheese the next, the beers were in a separate box with doors cut in for everyday but the fridge ones opened with the message to look in the other box. So far it's been a hit with the discovery of an awesome goats Brie we will definitely buy more of and some really nice local cheeses. The ready made cheese advent calendars were so piss poor I didn't even consider buying them.

Zoflorabore · 18/12/2018 16:08

Ooh I love cheese! What a waste...
And it's not cheap.

Currently munching on Jacobs crackers with Dairylea. classy

JingsMahBucket · 23/12/2018 21:26

@wonkylegs, that I such an excellent idea and I’m stealing it for next year. Yoink! There would be something for both of us to enjoy.

ManicLoki · 23/12/2018 21:31

DP is a huge fan of Wensleydale with cranberries, which suits me as he can have all of it and I eat all the rest.

I think I will probably consume around 2m Kg of cheese by myself over the next couple of weeks. I'll give it a bloody good go anyway.
