Aah it’s such a minefield.

Think my ds (13) would love one of these and I have brill memories of all the games.

Can’t decide what one to get and if they are any good.

Anyone got one?

They’re really good for nostalgia but the problem with them is that the graphics are of course terrible and the games very basic which means it’s a few hours play at the most before getting bored! If he has a console already you can normally buy a disc with a lot of the old retro games on it which would be cheaper?

“Retro” covers a great deal so I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for an original SEGA megadrive or 1st version Nintendo you might need to spend a bit to get one in good working order. Plus if you have a modern tv you’ll need to make sure you can connect. We have a fairly old tv (not smart) some some old consoles we have had we have had to do some wire trickery.

Does your DS play modern consoles? I often don’t think the “retro” games hold up well for the new generation if I’m honest. I love them because of the memory I have playing them. To kids who are used to playing modern games, the graphics are rubbish and the gameplay is boring.

A “mini” version of the retro consoles like the “mini” Nintendo might be best, they come with a range of games and easily plug into most TVs like this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073BVHY3F/ref=asc_df_B073BVHY3F57532273/?hvlocphy=9046185&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&hvnetw=g&hvadid=310694401667&creative=22122&hvpone&hvlocint&creativeASIN=B073BVHY3F&hvpos=1o2&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforum-21&hvtargid=pla-362936583118&hvrand=8340677188993598517

I bought this Sega megadrive for my DS a few years ago and it's great value for money as you get loads of old games with it. It's small enough to pop in a cupboard when you're not using it too.

I have a couple of retro consoles, snes, nintendo64, dream cast etc but like others the reason I love playing them is the nostalgia factor of having played them as a kid.

Rather then going for a whole console as some of the retro games and accessories can be pricey! Maybe a game with some retro classics on, I know ps3 had a retro Sega mega drive game.

Thank you! I still can’t decide

Are the handheld ones any good?

I think they're bai my for people who remember the originals. The sound of the Sega start up music still makes me feel happy. Grin So I'd love one of the Mega Drive ones. Not sure a child now would like it enough beyond novelty factor on Boxing Day.

You could just buy yourself one and let him have a go.

We have the Mega Druve flashback and it’s great fun. The controllers are wireless and feel a bit plasticky/flimsy but that’s my only compliant. It takes the old cartridges too, and you can plug in a Genesis controller. I’ve no complaints about the graphics - they’ve been scaled for widescreen/HD so it’s not a tiny square of pixels on the screen.

MinecraftHolmes · 17/12/2018 22:08

DS (6) has access to a PS4 but asks for Somic on the Mega Drive more often now. Not sure if it would be much beyond novelty factor for a teen though.

Sonic... fat fingers tonight!

Not yet got any myself. I agree with PP - has your DS shown any interest in retro gaming?

The Classic Mini SNES is probably the best of the bunch, many of the games on it still hold up well today. The games on the Classic Mini NES may be a bit too old to hold his interest, while with the Playstation Mini I think the early 3D graphics don't have the timeless charm of the SNES's 2D. (Plus the Playstation Mini has a lot of 15 and 18 rated games). I don't know much about the SEGA ones.

If he already has a console, you may want to check out what retro games are available on it, to either buy them or to pick a retro console with less overlap.
