I really need some advice. I took my son to a&e today with a high fever of 38.5°C, fast breathing and shivering. The doctor seen him and sent us home, just telling us he had a viral infections. We've given him Calpol and steipped him down to his nappy but put a thin sheet over him. His temperature is 39.5°C at the moment and I don't know whether to take him back to the hospital. The only thing that seems wrong with him is his temperature which I've been told is fine as a fever is a good sign he's fighting the viral infection. When should I start to worry? Thank you in advance for any help you give.

Worst temp in my household was a whopping 41 in my youngest. On that occasion I did go to out of hours (not a&e) and it was still just calpol and ibuprofen. As others have said, it's the other symptoms you need to look for in addition to the temp.

Don't alternate every 2 hours as u can only have 3x nurofen and 4x calpol in 24hrs..
do alternate but space then out so child is constantly covered by something

Ibuprofen usually does the job if calpol isn’t breaking the fever. Hope he feels better soon!

The reason we went to a&e was because he had the same symptoms a month earlier and ended up having an hour long seizure, we rang 111 explained the situation and they said to take him immediately just incase it happens again, we've given him Calpol and iberprofen and his temperature has dropped a bit, he's fallen asleep for the night now so hopefully a sleep will sort him out by the morning, I'll keep checking him through the night though

So7nds like a febrile seizure which are fairly common. Just keep an eye on him, most of the time they get over it fairly quick. Things always get worse before they get better.

We had this (14 months old) last week...3 says of temperatures bouncing up and down in line with Calpol intake. It has passed now, and has just left a shed load of snot and no appetite.

I hope similar happens for you.

Did they do any blood tests/chest x-rays when you went to A&E? How rapid was his breathing? We they concerned about that?

We ended up in A&E on advice from 111 with similar symptoms and were put on the sepsis pathway initially but turned out he had a severe chest infection.

In your shoes I'd monitor him and phone back 111 if he doesn't improve.
