Does anyone have an intolerance to rice (but not other grains)?

My dp has long term abdo pain (6 years). I won’t go into the entire medical history, but he’s been on millions of different meds, has been misdiagnosed, tested for all sorts. Currently he doesn’t have a diagnosis, but ‘possible’ IBS is the latest.

There are no other consistencies with food related triggers, except rice it seems. There’s no other pattern, he can eat a burger and be fine, a salad or something light and it leave him in pain. So for ages we thought it wasn’t food related. But recently we’ve been thinking about it and each time we have rice, he’s really bad for a few days after.

Nothing else, he can (seemingly) eat bread, cereal, wraps, pasta. Pasta especially seems to be a good choice for him, he’s never bad after it.

We have rice with various meals, so I don’t think it would be another ingredient we have with it. Always have it fresh, never reheated, tends to be basmati or long grain, and mainly just salted.

I can’t find anything online to suggest what the answer could be, apart from food poisoning from reheated rice, which it isn’t. Or a general intolerance to grain which again he doesn’t seem to have.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this, or has an idea why it could be the case?

A quick Google shows rice to be a known, but not frequently occurring, allergen, so it's certainly possible.

There are two choices, have him tested for rice allergy or just stop eating rice and, if he improves, avoid rice in the future.

I have ibs and have to be careful with rice, especially white rice.

Its definately not an allergy though, it just makes me uncomfortable.

Fascinating! My breast-feeding consultant (yes, I know...) told me that about the only 'inert foods' one could eat was rice and pears!

Thanks. As an allergen, it says there are other symptoms (typical allergy ones), which he doesn’t have. I wasn’t able to find any info about it as a dietary intolerance, when it’s not grouped with other food. Any chance you could post the link to what you found?

Thanks scared, thats really interesting. It’s really difficult to figure out what’s food related, what’s med related and what’s just the way it is.

Do you have issues with other grains etc?

I always thought rice was a ‘safe’ food in general Confused so have been scratching my head.

Rice is the only thing I can't eat, it makes my stomach hurt so much. It feels like it swells up and causes terrible pain and discomfort for a while. I was ok until the last few years but can't eat it now

Justlikedevon · 17/12/2018 20:01

I can't tolerate rice either. If I eat it I bloat terribly and get awful stomach pains. It's like I literally feel it passing through every inch of my stomach. Other grains I'm not great with, but rice is one of the worst.

Ds struggles with rice. He's fine with rice flour, milk, etc, it's just rice itself he can't tolerate. Ends up in pain for a couple of days afterwards.
Its not an allergy (he has multiple allergies too), "just" an intolerance, but unpleasant none the less.

scaredofthecity · 17/12/2018 20:27

I can't eat oats at all, and too much wheat and I regret it but it certainly doesn't stop me eating it! Dairy is the worst for me however.

I do find that processed carbs bother me more than their natural forms, and try to stick to wholegrain versions.
