Never sure and always turn them off but what do you all do? Can I leave them on?

I turn mine off when I go out and overnight.

KnittingSister · 17/12/2018 08:21

No. It's a fire risk.

tryinganewname · 17/12/2018 08:21

Turn them off. As lovely as it is to come home to the lights on, there has been so many house fires due to Christmas lights - some with tragic consequences.

Noooo! A house near me caught fire a couple of years ago and their cat and dog died in the blaze. How hard is it to flick a switch?

3boysandabump · 17/12/2018 12:09

No it's a fire risk they should be turned off overnight and when leaving the house.

AnotherPidgey · 17/12/2018 13:24

LEDs heat up far less than traditional bulbs.

I usually turn them off, but as the fake tree with LED lights is in a cool conservatory, I don't sweat it if I'm going out for a short time and forgot.

FourFuxxakes · 17/12/2018 13:45

Looking at my sister's setup last night with something like 8 plugs in one gangsocket into one wall socket, I think the risk is probably more to do with electrical fires rather than the bulbs overheating.

I wouldn't leave them on in any case. Electricity costs money and uses the earth's resources that we can ill afford to waste.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 17/12/2018 13:48

You can but it's one of the most common sources of fire outbreaks over the Christmas period.

Personally I wouldn't risk it and I turn them off when I go out and overnight.

Drogosnextwife · 17/12/2018 13:48

I know of a woman who left hers on at night. Caused a fire and her son died. I always turn mine off.

cjt110 · 17/12/2018 13:55

If you would like them to be on when you come home, and know when you'll be home, invest in a timer. That's what we have done this year

gladiatorgirl · 17/12/2018 15:04

Always turn them off. I know a family that left their tree lights on whilst they went out to the pub. They came home to find their house burnt down and their three children dead. Not worth the risk

Tattletale · 17/12/2018 15:10

I turn our lights off when we go out and go to bed. I'm a worrier and it only takes a second.

Cheeseandapple · 17/12/2018 15:14

Ok as I thought but glad I checked! Thanks everyone and sorry to hear of the losses some posters have experienced x

The latest fire tragedy in the news suggested faulty lights. When that poor man wakes up and finds out his dw, dd +ds have died is beyond words.
Maybe mners should vow to switch off lights on leaving the house and at night in respect.. Flowers

PleaseJustSayNo · 17/12/2018 15:19

I always leave mine on Blush

DisposableNN · 17/12/2018 15:20

I m not a worrier about most stuff - certainly not compared to majority of mners - but all my lights get turned off when I go out or when I go to bed.

Almondio · 17/12/2018 15:26

Our local fire service is on social media telling people to turn lights off overnight and when out.

GreenMeerkat · 17/12/2018 15:27

No I always turn them off.

Aside from the electricity use and fire risk, what is the point of leaving them on if you're not there do actually see them?

Redglitter · 17/12/2018 15:31

My brother attended a fire several years ago just before Christmas. Whole house was destroyed. Nothing at all saved. The family were left with literally the clothes they were wearing.

Cause - Christmas tree lights being left on while they 'popped to the shop'
