That's about it really. My DS reads quite challenging books for school and I wanted to get him something quite quick and easy to read over Xmas. Is 12 nearly 13 too old?

I would say so. My 8 year old has been reading them for a while but can read one in a day!

My DS3 started reading them years ago and I still get him the most recent one each Christmas. He’s 16 and definitely too old but doesn’t care. Not sure if that helps...

Way too old I'd say! My year 4 class find them too easy!

I would say too old. Different if he has read them and liked them but not as a random purchase. What about a Guinness book of records type book?

Floralnomad · 16/12/2018 22:52

Not if you think he will enjoy reading them . I’m in my early 50s and have reread some of my favourite horsy books from my childhood in the last year , it was fun .

BikeRunSki · 16/12/2018 22:53

My 7 year old is reading them; her brother started them at 8, and still reads them (he’s 10) They only last s few hours.

How about the early Adrian Mole diaries - imagine that they are quite dated by now, but full of teenage angst and social commentary of the time.

Paddy1234 · 16/12/2018 22:54

Probably is to old however I was told by teachers that any reading is 'good'.
Consequently my son read mainly comic book annuals up the age of 12 - he didn't want to read 'proper' books.
He is top set across the board so hasn't done him any harm.

bloated1977 · 16/12/2018 22:56

He's read all the others but admittedly not for a while..Just wanted to get him off the Xbox and reading at home...but nothing too serious or boring!

It’s so sad that reading has come up this competitive thing. If he will enjoy them, then get them. I am an avid reader. Sometimes I read something dead easy, sometimes more challenging. It’s all good.

No age is "too old" to read anything. I have been an adult for a while but still read YA books.

13 might be too old to enjoy or be happy to have these books as a present though.

If I were trying to get a teenage boy to read I'd give him Gone because it's a scary dystopia where all the adults disappear and there are monsters.

No age is too old for any book but probably best to just ask him if he wants it.
