How to get smell of fabric softener OUT?!

Cauliflowersqueeze · 16/12/2018 22:20

I bought what I thought would be a lovely scented fabric softener (a Lenor one). I washed my duvet cover in it a couple of months ago and despite washing it about 6 times since without any fabric softener (just Ariel powder), the smell of it lingers.

Any smart tricks to get rid of it please??

Vinegar.

It doesn't smell of vinegar but just smells natural

Cauliflowersqueeze · 16/12/2018 22:22

Oh great. How much. Prepared to buy litres of it if necessary.

I usually put in the same amount as I would have fabric softener. Make sure you get distilled vinegar (sometimes called white vinegar) it should be clear!
Top tip DO NOT use malt (brown) vinegar!

Chuck some bicarb of soda in with it too

Littlelambpeep · 16/12/2018 22:41

Yeah vicarb and vinegar.

What lenor was it? Intrigued

Cauliflowersqueeze · 16/12/2018 22:41

It was in a black bottle. Which is now in the bin.

Bicarb + vinegar = foamy explosion. I wouldn't use them together unless you're unblocking drains or making a volcano as a school project.

ChristmasNC · 16/12/2018 22:45

Lol at bicarb and vinegar! Do not do this OP!

I tried fairy liquid once in the dishwasher when I ran out of tablets.

It was like Santa’s grotto - with more and more effervescing our! Was laughing so hard at the mess!

I’d do a wash with bicarbonate, then when it’s finished, putnit straight back in for a rinse and spin cycle with the white vinegar.

Eventually it will fade.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 17/12/2018 00:22

I find whacking things in the line on a rainy day really good for clearing smells too.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 17/12/2018 02:51

Are you sure you're not bothered by the smell of the Ariel powder? I find the scent of that stuff absolutely overpowering. Supermarket own brand powders smell nice but not in that throat catching way.

Youmatter · 17/12/2018 03:22

I wish I could get mine to linger!

I’ve cleaned the machine multiple times but I find the items don’t smell an awful lot. It’s so annoying!

I’m also a bit much with my duvet covers. I need to change them about three times a week

UserX · 17/12/2018 08:34

Do a cleaning cycle on your machine & scrub out softener drawer then wash duvet with bicarbonate as above. Dry outside.

Any softener residue in your machine will keep the smell going.

Fromage · 17/12/2018 08:39

Lenor is absolutely awful.

Burn the duvet cover. It's the only way.

SixButterflies · 17/12/2018 09:04

I loathe Lenor. All Lenors just smell like Lenor. There's a base smell in all of them that is horrible. It sticks like glue to clothes and ages later, if you rub the fabric, that pervasive smell comes out. It's terrible stuff.

If only the ones I love the smell of lasted so well! What on earth do they put in it? (Where's that helpful lady who did an AMA thread about laundry stuff when you need her?)

Anyway. Back on track. 🙄😃White vinegar works very well.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 17/12/2018 09:17

Oh god.... I love that particular Lenor so much I made an 'air freshener' out of it - Lenor + water in a spray bottle 😂

Cauliflowersqueeze · 17/12/2018 18:43

Thanks for all your help. I will update with outcome of bicarbonate/ vinegar cleansing!!
