Do smartphones affect your concentration?

Im addicted to my phone and hate myself for it. I need to sort that. I also think it's really starting to affect my ability to concentrate. I have no attention span and struggle to read. Any tips for weaning myself off my stupid addictive phone and social media?

In my own opinion they do, I feel as though I’ve lost the ability to read because of it. I’m so used to quickly looking at things in small bursts and when I read I can hardly remember what was on the previous page

I'm addicted. Thanks for the reminder to put it down. I will try harder. Argggggh.

NancyDonahue · 16/12/2018 21:40

Yes definitely. I find my mind clears, like fog clearing, if I have a good amount of time away from my phone.

I've got an app to block websites and apps on my phone which is great. I just have a very bad case of FOMO. And agree with reading in short bursts affecting my concentration. Why can't I just get off the damm thing.

Me too. What’s the blocking app you use?

Knittink · 17/12/2018 11:33

Hmm - I'm pretty addicted to my phone and it certainly affects my productivity levels, but I haven't noticed any effect in ny concentration. I read lots and do other things that require prolonged attention (knitting etc).

I am actually writing a book on this very subject! Smartphones are absolutely affecting our attention spans but that is just scratching the surface.
It's incredibly scary when you understand the effects of these devices and the ways in which we are manipulated into continuously using them.
To offer suggestions I would start by limiting your time on your phone, avoid social media, stop using your phone at least two hours before bed and when you're in a 'no phone' stretch of time, put it out of the way in a drawer.

I could write about this for hours but hope this helps a little!

You’re not the only one OP. I’m so over it but just can’t seem to put the damn thing down! Like now, it’s 9:45pm, I’m winding down for bed and should not be on my phone, but here I am. I’ve actually just ventured into _Chat as I was bored of AIBU. I should be reading my book instead.

I reckon so yes. I'm dumber since the Internet revved up

AhoyDelBoy · 18/12/2018 04:39

Yes I think you can read the first chapter of that book for free too.
