Can I watch Netflix on a normal TV?

Wasn't sure where to post this.
I'm thinking about subscribing to Netflix as an Xmas present for student dcs. If I get the 4 device option we can watch it too! Or can we?

Obvs we could watch it on the laptop, but our tv isn't smart, we have basic sky box, not sky Q, no games consoles. Is there a way of watching it on our tv or would we need to upgrade?

I watch it on a normal TV using fire TV from amazon, it just plugs into the hdmi slot. Other boxes are available too.

I think you would need to upgrade to a smart tv as Netflix is streamed to your TV. but I’m sure someone more tech savvy will confirm!

You could use a chrome cast as long as you have a HDMI port on your tv.

Yes - with an Amazon Firestick or Now TV box or similar, they turn your telly into a smart tv via HDMI port.

TheEagle · 16/12/2018 18:23

I have a 10 year old, non-smart TV and we watch Netflix successfully on it!

I have a Chromecast device that plugs into the back of the telly and “speaks” to my iPad where I have Netflix.

Spamfrittersforeveryone · 16/12/2018 18:23

Get an amazon fire stick and you can.

TooTrueToBeGood · 16/12/2018 18:24

By a fire stick. As long as your tv has an hdmi port that will do you. A new model has just come out and their selling the previous one for £25 at the moment.

OvO · 16/12/2018 18:26

Do you have an Xbox or PlayStation? We watch Netflix via an app on the consoles.

Fairylea · 16/12/2018 18:27

Chromecast from Argos or amazon and you can cast it over.

TwistedStitch · 16/12/2018 18:28

I watch it on TV via my sky box.

starzig · 16/12/2018 18:29

You just buy a media stick for about £30. (Make sure your tv has a USB port) reslly easy to set up. There are several makes. Roku, Chromecast, firestick are just a few.

JWrecks · 16/12/2018 18:31

I just connect a long HDMI cable to my ('dumb') TV and watch whatever netflix or youtube or anything else from that way. I love it, but I also really love not having to 'type' or whatever via a remote...

Yes I'm old and cranky. Why do you ask? Wink

FiendinFelineForm · 16/12/2018 18:34

You'll need something to connect your TV to the internet and run Netflix. An HDMI cable from your laptop's HDMI out, to the TV's HDMI in port will do the job.

For more money and ease of use - we have a roku box. £25, has it's own remote control and runs Netflix, Now TV and Amazon Video (when you take out subcriptions).

IwillrunIwillfly · 16/12/2018 18:36

I'd recommend an Amazon fire stick. One off cost, and you can watch Netflix, BBC iPlayer and loads of other things. Really simple to use and just works with another remote control, no wires etc. I love mine!

xyzandabc · 16/12/2018 19:26

As long as you have the port on the TV to plug it in, a chrome cast will do the trick.

So you have the Netflix app on your tablet or phone, find what you want to watch, press play like you were going to watch it on your device but then press the little Chromecast icon on the screen. It then magically makes the program appear on your TV and you can use your device for other things.

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 16/12/2018 19:30

Thanks all. Glad I asked.
So the consensus is that I need some sort of stick if I don't want to use a cable from the laptop. Are the sticks a one off payment? I don't want to subscribe to anything else.!
God I sound ancient!

I got an amazon fire stick in the Black Friday sale £24.99 and it’s brilliant. We move it around the house according to which room we want to watch TV in. It has Netflix, amazon tv (need a prime account) , YouTube, bbc iPlayer, ITV hub, all4, my5 and loads of others. It’s great.

BoebePhuffay · 16/12/2018 19:32

Yes the firestick is a one off payment. Not sure about any others.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/12/2018 19:33

we use a chromecast, so useful!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/12/2018 19:34

chromecast is a one off purchase.
