Will banks change an old £5 note?

I was asked if I had change for a £5 note in a car park last week and unusually I did. Turns out the £5 is actually one of the old ones which I obviously can't spend. Any idea if a bank will change it or am I a fiver down?
Bit annoyed with myself for not checking it but had just been on the M25 so was quite relieved to be out the car!

They may do - or you can do it in person or post t the Bank of England: www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/exchanging-old-banknotes

We had trouble changing several we were given at the Christmas fair (I’m on the school pta)

You can only change them at the Bank of England now, we tried pretty much every high street bank.
You can do it by post if you don’t have one nearby.

I was visiting the UK with an old note in Oct. The bank wouldn't change it because I wasnt an account holder so they told me to go to the bureau de change in Debenhans who did.
So your own bank should take it.

Thank you all. I'll try in the bank branches first and see.

If you do end up at the Bank of England they have quite a good free museum - fairly small. You get the chance to try to lift a gold bar!! Very close to the Monument too so you can have quite a good day out!

I managed to get one changed at a branch of my bank about 4/5 weeks ago. It was also badly damaged and torn in half!

Metro today in London changed an old tenner. We needed to be a customer.

I’ve changed old notes before at a branch of my own bank.

You cN send them in, if you have a problem.

Or probably ebay it for more than it is worth!

Toxthing · 18/12/2018 21:39

Halifax will change them. Have recently changed £5 notes and £1 coins with no problem

swampytiggaa · 18/12/2018 21:45

I work in a charity shop. We regularly get old coins and notes in. We are able to bank them as normal currently. I think your own bank should take it but you may have to deposit it rather than exchange iyswim

Santander has changed several for me! I didn't have to deposit them.

Co-op bank changed one for me a few weeks ago.
