Make up when you get older.

I'm 59 - don;t wear makeup very often (ie - only when going out, not daily). I don't know much about make up - I've been using the same colours etc since I was much younger. Went out the other niht nd thought my make up looked too strident for want of a better word - colours too dark and bold.

I'm sure it is obvious that you should change as you get older, but it never occured to me before ! What sort of colours should I go for for a softer look ? if it helps - I have darkish hair and eyebrows, green eyes, but fairly light skin, I'm not hugely wrinkly, but I look my age (you'd probably guess around 60 if you looked at me - not trying to look younger, just less like a kid who's got hold of the face paints Grin)

By colours I mean eye shadow, lipstick, blusher etc. - Do I need to go more neutral or pinky ? (at the moment I go for greens/brown on eyes and a kind of burgundy shade lipstick and a bronzy blusher). My mouth seems to have got smaller over the years - I'd like my lips to look a bit fuller (not trout pout - just less cats bum)

Any suggestions gratefully received .

Have a look I on YouTube for make up tutorials for more mature ladies. I'm 48 and have learned so much over the past 6 months and have now really got into skincare and beauty. It gets quite addictive. I like sugarpuffandfluff, diaryofa49something and mrs ginger beauty amongst others

Hello! I'm a similar vintage to you, and when I encountered s similar problem I went to a large department store and had a makeover at the Bobbi Brown counter(I'd heard that they're 'good' at make up for the more mature ladyGrin)
There's no pressure to buy any products and they give you samples to take away and try (as do all the big brands,Clinique etc)
Worth a visit?

I'm just a few years younger than you & have been thinking about the same thing. I don't wear makeup much but want to get it right when I do, so in other words not wearing the same colours I used to in my 20s because they aren't right any more.

I've taught myself a bit about products & techniques from YouTube, and today I had a chat with a No. 7 consultant in Boots (who was around my age so got where I was coming from) & came away with some nice stuff that wasn't too expensive & feels right for me.

Thank you all - great suggestions - I shalll get you tubing today and get some idea. I live in a small town, we don;t have any of the big dept stores that have make up sections, but we do have a decent Boots - so I shall try in there and see what they can offer.

I think I need to look at an overall 'make over' for my make up. At the moment i tend to buy the odd bit if I see something i fancy, and then of course it doesn't really go with other stuff I already have. Time for an over haul !

To tell the truth - I've never been much good at make up, but I think I got away with it when I was younger (or maybe I didn't !) but now it's not just my colouring that has changed, but the shape of my face - it has become a bit bonier and thinner looking as I've aged, and I think that adds to make up sometimes looking a bit harsh.

Many thanks again for tips Flowers

I know you don't have big shops close to you, but if you get the chance I think Bobbi Brown are great at makeup for real women of all ages. I had a free session with them, where they colour matched my foundation and did my makeup using lots of other products. There wasn't any pressure to buy. And yes, the makeup is £, but I definitely think you get what you pay for with foundation, and it lasts for ages.
