Merry christmas Mumsnetters! I call upon you for advice!

i'm hoping to book a trip to the US sometime between Jan - March. it'll just be me and my partner, we're both 29, no kids and we both drive. I've tried narrowing my ideas down by our interests and what we'd like to see and do but the truth is = we'd be interested in pretty much all of it! My only stipulation is that i'd prefer it if it weren't deathly cold.

Any suggestions, stories, nice things to do etc would be very appreciated Grin

If you want want it to be deathly cold then you need to avoid the east or mid west and go for the south or west. It’s probably a nice time of year to do California or some of the southern states. Most of California would be nice and warm and the South will be around 15 / 16 in Jan feb and getting warmer by March

California...land in San Francisco, drive the coastal highway to LA. It's a cliche because it is genuinely an amazing holiday! There is so much variety and you can tailor to your own preferences. I love the coastal route, San Francisco itself, wasn't blown away by LA but quite liked Santa Monica and strolling along Venice beach. Loved Monterey, seeing whales and sea otters, loved the town of Santa Barbara.

Probably one of my favourite cities ever is Charleston, South Carolina, but distances are long and I'd struggle harder to come up with an itinerary for a 2 week trip.

Also if you are a museum and gallery person Washington DC is pretty amazing as there are loads which have the bonus of being free.

I have family in the US and have been to quite a few states, but my favourites to visit are San Diego and Boston.

Austin Texas is brilliant and the live music there is amazing

ALL the places.

Best USA road trip I ever did was the Deep South, extremely thought provoking. We did a lot of civil rights things, went to a plantation, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans etc. We phoned our parents a lot during the trip to talk about their experiences of the 60s, and how the UK saw what was happening. I hugely recommend it, the food was fabulous as well, and of course the music.

Trailfinders Western USA tour

My parents did this tour and said it was amazing - lots of variety and really interesting places. Not suggesting you do the tour itself but it might give you some ideas. There are actually lots of good itineraries on the trail finders website.
