Will school allow medication that contains peanuts on premises?

DD2 has been prescribed a nasal cream (x4 times a day for 10 days).

One of the ingredients is peanut oil.

School is very strict re not allowing peanuts and nuts on site.

Obviously all school policies differ, but does anyone know (in their experience) whether they anticipate a school allowing the medication to stay on site?

I imagine it needs to be administered by a school first aider or nurse? Should be fine ..
If he has to self administer, that will be more of an issue so talk to the school.

I know our primary school does, where medicines are held and administered by staff. HTH!

cliffdiver · 15/12/2018 09:03

Administering actually involves putting a finger up DDs nose, so we're practising her self-administering this weekend.

I will ask school on Monday but I drop DDs to breakfast club before the office staff are in, I don't know if the BC staff will necessarily know the policy and allow me to leave the cream.

Please also have her practise washing her hands thoroughly after she applied it.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/12/2018 06:15

I'm guessing it would need to be kept in the nurses offi

swimmerforlife · 16/12/2018 06:48

Well the school shouldn't be able to say no, quite simply your DD needs the medication. I'm sure arrangements can made to ensure the cream can be applied.

I don't know what the school will say, but even eating peanut oil is unlikely to cause a reaction in anyone with a peanut allergy. So it shouldn't pose a danger for other pupils. I would say yes, she should be allowed, because its for medical purpose. Applied in a controlled environment (such as nurses office) and hands thoroughly washed afterwards. I say this as the parent of a (now young adult) with a very severe peanut allergy.

cliffdiver · 18/12/2018 07:03

Thank you for the replies.

School allowed it to be kept on site (in Office, as per all other meds).

DD under strict instructions to wash hands before and after - I also wrote this on the medication form.
