Don't do what I've done twice and leave the keys on the roof and then drive off. They're mega expensive to replace Blush

Haworthia · 14/12/2018 23:00

I think “struggling” is a bit much! It’s just something you get used to... pretty quickly.

When we changed cars we went from having to press a button on the key fob to unlock, to just wrapping our hand around the door handle (as long as you have the actual key on you). That was a bit weird but it’s second nature now.

Bloodybridget · 14/12/2018 23:00

You'll probably get used to it very quickly, that's all I can say! We've had a keyless car for several years, I love it. What are you struggling with, exactly?

InSightMars · 14/12/2018 23:03

Struggling with what exactly? You can double-press the button on the key fob itself to remote start the car or you press the ignition button when you get in. Most 'keyless' fobs also have the actual key shaft bit folded inside, you fish it out from the top and it 'locks' into place then you can use it as you would a normal car key.

Longdistance · 14/12/2018 23:04

My key lives in my coat pocket.

As it is keyless, have you got a faraday pouch for the keys (I also keep my spare one in one), as the car can be easily stolen through theives finding the signal. If it’s kept in the pouch, no signal can be found. You can buy them on Amazon.

When I park up, my key goes in the pouch.

GunpowderGelatine · 14/12/2018 23:04

Remember where you've put it, because as long as it's in the car the car can turn on. I often scrap about in my pocket, handbag, the cup holder etc because I can't remember where I chucked it!

Livedandlearned2 · 14/12/2018 23:04

Just don't drive anywhere without the keyless card thing with you (not just in your house), or you will be stranded.

Burlea · 14/12/2018 23:05

Make sure you always have the keys in your bag/pocket. Today I dropped DH off at the hospital (he drove there). He never turned the engine off, I just moved into the driver's seat. I got into town was only going to take something back to next then go back and pick him up. Parked up turned engine off then realised he had the keys.
2 mile walk for him.
Otherwise we love it.

Tiredmum100 · 14/12/2018 23:07

You'll get use to it soon enough. Then youll get into a car that still need a a key and you'll be looking for the button!

vdbfamily · 14/12/2018 23:08

I hated it to start with but now I love the fact that as long as the card is in my handbag the car unlocks as I get to it(very useful with bags of shopping etc) and locks as I walk away. Every time I hear the click of it locking I get a satisfied feeling(is that sad?!) No more rooting around in the bottom of a bag trying to find the keys ever again....until I get to our front door and then the search begins!

Athena51 · 14/12/2018 23:09

I've had my keyless car for a few years now and I love it, as long as the key is somewhere near it automatically locks and unlocks the car and starts it (when the button is pressed). You'll soon get used to not having a key.

jomaIone · 14/12/2018 23:12

Tips for what?? My 80 year old Grannie has a keyless car and has no issues...

AlessandroVasectomi · 14/12/2018 23:18

Mine has just a fob and you press a button on it to lock or unlock the car. The fob just has to be in the car to start the engine. It has a stop/start button like yours. Is this the arrangement you have or does it literally have no key, fob or anything?

If yours is like mine (called ‘keyless go’ I believe) there is usually somewhere in the central console to put the fob while you’re driving. Being a bloke, I just keep the fob in my pocket.

MsJolly · 14/12/2018 23:21

Not sure how you got into town without the knowing the key wasn’t in the car-mine goes mental if I even step out of the car with the key in my pocket if the engine is turned on!

Armchairanarchist · 14/12/2018 23:26

You soon get used to it. Now I struggle when I get in DH's car for the opposite reason.

HildaZelda · 15/12/2018 00:52

DH's car is keyless. I drive it occasionally. I don't mind the keyless thing, but I HATE the push button handbrake. It always feels like the most unsafe thing ever.

SuperDuperJezebel · 15/12/2018 08:49

Same with mine @MsJolly!

MILHouse · 15/12/2018 08:53

Mine definitely lets you carry on driving if the key leaves the vehicle. As we’ve discovered several times!

littleducks · 15/12/2018 09:06

Used to have one and I wouldn't again. That sinking feeling that you can't turn car off because it won't start again as you don't have the key anymore (yup dh walked off with it/was in a bag you dropped off etc)

Walking up with shopping was useful. But I was permanently terrified would accidently drop key close to car so it would start and drive off

madasamarchhare · 15/12/2018 09:20

You will get used to it very quickly. I would reiterate buying a faraday pouch or keeping keys in a tin when you’re at home to block the signal. Keyless carvthefts are sadly v v common now. Otherwise they are extremely convenient. I love walking up to my car and literally pulling the door handle and it all unlocks.

Onesmallstepforaman · 15/12/2018 10:09

Leave the key near your front door. That way any thief can take the car without terrorizing the family to get it. Better to lose a car than suffer for a piece of metal. Those who say they'd take a burglar on are either deluded or keen on taking a hiding.

Oldraver · 15/12/2018 10:39

Yes we have a couple of times had the one person OH walking off with the keys in their pocket. I just make sure I drive and have the keys if he needs dropping off

AlessandroVasectomi · 15/12/2018 12:46

A year ago I had a courtesy car while mine was being repaired. The courtesy car was keyless and the car hire guy let me drive off without giving me the fob thingy. I drove 5 miles home to find a strange car outside my house. We live at the end of a cul de sac, so an unfamiliar car parked outside is very noticeable. Anyway, it was the car hire guy; he had realised he still had the fob after I drove off so he grabbed the first available car they had and tore over to my house. And he got there before I did!
