Child benefit / NI contributions q

Hi all,

Wanted to get some clarity here before i start filling in forms.

Not too sure but think I will be a sahm after mat leave, I am not entitled to child benefit.

I understand I need to "claim" it to get my NI contributions for the time I am off work. I am a little confused, do i get "paid" £0 or do I get some and then pay it back? And DH would have to pay it back on his tax return or I can pay it back separately?

Had a quick look online but find MN always has the clearest answers :)

Also do I do it from when my maternity pay goes to 0 or after i officially leave (might go back for a while)

You can claim and tick a box for it not to be paid for you or you can actually pay it - in which case the higher earner has to pay it back - this can be done by adjusting their tax code - so net monthly impact is nil. You can claim as soon as baby is born.

We claim but opt out of payment so nothing to pay back. Claim as soon as you have had your baby. Does your dh earn over £60k As between £50 and £60k you only pay a proportion back (if taking the money)

We claim. And get the money too. Put it in our holiday account as a kind of early float -and then pay it back in full.

You can do either but if he consistently earns over 60k it is probably worth opting out of payments now.
