Do loads of people have synthasesia?

Is it more common than I imagined? I first came across it on here and am fascinated, I have no idea what everyone means :) I had assumed it was rare but there are loads of you!

I didn't think so, but, yes, Tuesdays are yellowSmile

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:11

But why??

OP posts:
minipie · 14/12/2018 11:11

Only on Mumsnet Wink

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:30

And is synthasesia just about colours, or do people get tastes etc too

FlamingJuno · 14/12/2018 11:31

Everyone on MN has a PhD as well or is about to embark on one Wink and nobody is ever the OW.

Jackshouse · 14/12/2018 11:32

It measure your senses are mixed up. I smell weather. DH is convinced I have it but I think he just can’t smell the weather and it’s a real thing.

DeeStopia · 14/12/2018 11:36

Yeah but it's very odd to me because I don't know how much of it is just my (very active) imagination! I do imagine everything as colours (especially names and individuals.)

RiddleyW · 14/12/2018 11:39

There’s a proper test for some forms of synesthesia but not others.

The one I remember reading about was where somebody sees numbers as colours. So you have a big group (like hundreds) of 3s and just a few 2s mixed in - all just black. Somebody with synesthesia should be able to identify the 2s much faster than someone without. In the sane way someone without synesthesia would be much quicker finding the 2s if they were printed in a different colour to the 3s.

DeadDoorpost · 14/12/2018 11:41

I did a very brief test and found that I can often get different days matched with foods that they were using... Tuesday is cake for me.

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:45

Dead but what do you mean matched? Who were they?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:46

Every day is cake for me. Nothing to do with synthasesia

OP posts:
bookworm14 · 14/12/2018 11:48

I have it mildly - I see letters, numbers and days of the week as colours. I’d assumed it was quite common.

Poppins2016 · 14/12/2018 11:49

Someone I know is certain that carrots 'taste purple'.

Oddly... I can see where he's coming from!

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:50

Didn't they used to be purple? Think he's just got it in the back of his mind.

OP posts:
IToldYouIWasFreaky · 14/12/2018 11:51

I used to have it a little bit. I remember that May was a deep purple and September bottle green.

Can't everyone smell the weather?! I can definitely smell when it's going to snow.

MiraculousMarinette · 14/12/2018 11:53

Synesthesia

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2018 11:54

Sorry I had no idea how to spell it so let my phone suggest

OP posts:
Witchend · 14/12/2018 11:59

I didn't think so, but, yes, Tuesdays are yellow
A very light yellow though. Mondays are red.

MiraculousMarinette · 14/12/2018 12:00

It's a tricky word Smile

feral · 14/12/2018 12:08

I did but only for days of the week. Didn't realise it had a name for 30 odd years.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/12/2018 12:12

Yea I do. Mostly with names a numbers.
Eg
1 is A business man.

  1. Is a both male and female. Lovely people in themselves but no sense of humour or fun. The type you wouldn't want to be trapped in a lift with.
  2. Loves a pint with his mates. Down to earth, probably called Tommy or Dave
  3. Sweet fun loving little girl. With long mid blond curly hair.
  4. See number 3.

Blond names girls.
Ellie.
Chloe
Lucy
Sophie.
Lily
Emily

Dark hair.
Jasmine.
Megan
Darcie
Rachael.
Beth
Courtney
Amelia
Lydia.

Red hair.
Georgia
Olivia.
Faye

Blond/light haired names.
Boys
Ethan
Caleb.
Ellis
Josh
Callum
Louis.
Thomas
Noah

Dark hair.
Alex.
Tom.
Adam
Alfie.
Gabriel. Dark curly hair with rosy chubby cheeks. I know of a red haired Gabriel. It really doesnt suit him at all.
James.
Alan
Andrew.
Daniel.
Nicholas.
Dexter.
Albie

Red hair names.
Elliot
Ben.

A work mate of mine sees numbers / cifers as forms - she can tell about (we checked) pi to the 125 decimal because shes sees them as waves.

I've only got coloured weekdays.

DinosApple · 14/12/2018 12:46

My eldest has it with numbers = colours.

I was Hmm when she said 7 was a horrible shade of yellow. 0-9 have specific colours after that it gets jumbly. It's fascinating though. Me, DD2 and DH don't have it though.

Mumberjack · 14/12/2018 13:15

I see letters and numbers as having their own colours.
I thought everyone did this until I mentioned it offhand to DH a couple of years ago and he was all Confused and ‘no...’
Someone who I went to primary school with did say that she felt that was why I was really good with words and numbers and it’s provably that the association helped.
She shared that she sees dates in a linear way so never misses a birthday or important date.

vampirethriller · 14/12/2018 16:33

I have coloured letters and numbers. I see all sounds in 3d, in colour. Spoken words are like a ticker tape/typewriter in my head, they appear as I hear them. Dates and times are linear. Languages I don't speak are just colour without words.
It's not something I can control, it's always there, I used to think everyone was the same til I mentioned it as a child and my mother thought I was mad.
