considering getting rid of car. which we currently only really use to do the weekly shop.
I hate deliveries with a passion.

A lot depends on how close you are to the shop and how you are going to transport your shopping. Oh and how many of you are at home, do you have pets (and pet food to buy) etc?

We do our shops by bike (with panniers). We have got very good at packing! We are 3 at home these days, occasionally 4 when DC1 is back from college.

OH does two main grocery shops per week on his days off (he works part time). I do maybe one top-up during the week, mostly to buy meat or fish for our dinner. But the supermarket is only 10 mins away from my work and 15 away from home.

We shop x2 or x3 week, I can't get on with meal planning as I change my mind but by shopping a couple of times a week I can cook what I fancy according to what I pick up. We have a great organic veg stall and a good local butcher so I tend to base my meals around what I can get from them. I do work part time, so that allows me the time to do that.

I also batch cook every week so there is always stuff I can just pull out of the freezer. We also eat a lot of soup which is great for using up odds and ends.

Our larder is full of chick peas, baked beans, tins of tuna, cans of tomatoes etc so if life got in the way and I couldn't get to the shops we wouldn't starve.
I buy lots of frozen fish, freeze down lots of meat, chorizo and always have a good stock of frozen fruit and veg in.

We are also a 2 min walk from tesco.so if we run out if milk its no biggie.

Usually once every 3 months I do a massive iceland shop and buy jars of gravy granules, loo roll, cleaning supplies, tins, pizzas, garlic bread, chips and veg and get it delivered for free, so it saves me lugging the stuff home.

I would do a really big shop whilst you still have the car. I’m not keen on deliveries but they are useful for occasional deliveries of lots of tins etc.

TulipsInbloom1 · 13/12/2018 21:29

I would do a monthly delivery for tins, loo rolls, cat food, toiletries, freezer items.

Pop to shops 2 or 3 times a week for the fresh meat, veg, breads and milk.

I used to get two deliveries per week from ocado. It was great because stuff didn't go out of date and if we ran out of something we never had to wait very long to have it delivered.

I've now gone back to one delivery, mainly as it seems easier to control the budget.

EverardDigby · 13/12/2018 21:33

I have one delivery a month for heavy things and then I go to the shops as needed. They're only a five minute walk for me though. It's fine, I think I buy less, though sometimes I have nothing to eat! Also run out of basics sometimes. It doesn't really bother me though, milk would be the only thing but I usually have cartons of non dairy milk.

I shop daily. I am very fortunate to live next door to a lidl. I am a very fussy eater and like to have something I fancy rather than what is in. I'm currently feeding myself and two teens for £6 per day. Its amazing how shopping frequently reduces your food bill.
It wouldn't have been possible anywhere else I'd lived though.

Bluebelltulip · 13/12/2018 21:37

Growing up and at uni I used a taxi to come back from weekly shop. At the end of term me and DH used our hiking rucksacks when student loan was running out.

Pidgeot · 13/12/2018 21:37

I've gone the reverse! I used to and preferred it but now do monthly ones just as its awkward to get to the shops where I live now.
If your walking I'd recommend one of them pulling shopping trolleys, even though your goi G more frequent you will still need heavier items like cans etc.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 13/12/2018 21:37

I work in a supermarket so just do a quick trolley dash 3 times a week.

Works better for us.

When I did a weekly shop I found it tiresome to have to eat something because it was going out of date or because that’s what I’d planned a week ago.

I zip round now and get what we actually fancy. I get really good reduced stuff too with the intention of eating it that night.

I would definitely do a big once a month loo rolls and cans kind of shop too though.

AnotherPidgey · 13/12/2018 21:48

Frequency does mean less waste as there are less variables meaning food goes unused.

Probably worth a monthly delivery for bulky and heavy long life goods to help witg transport.

redsummershoes · 13/12/2018 21:57

thanks all.
I have a pull along shopping trolley. 30l, so not huge.
shops are walking distance, less than half a mile away.
4 of us, no pets.
