Can you buy tranexamic acid?

Having a v v heavy period, I’ve given up on sanitary pads and now using Tena lady incontinence things - used to get them prescribed for the same purpose as well as ‘flat pads’ for the bed ... I haven’t had periods for years due to being on the implant so have had a bit of a shock with how heavy this is.

I’ve got iron tablets etc so fine on that front and don’t need to go anywhere tomorrow , can spend the day in/on my bed thankfully !

I’ve had tranexamic acid before when I was having regular periods , but only have 2 or 3 tablets in the house and won’t be able to get a prescription before the weekend now .

I seem to remember being told you can buy tranexamic acid but not sure if that’s still the case ? Just wondering if it’s worth going to chemist instead of trying to get a GP appt, if you can buy the stuff !

Yes you can but not from everywhere. Boots do it though. Flowers for you, it sucks.

I tried to buy over the counter at the chemist when I was on holiday (in the uk) this year and was refused without a prescription

Yes all pharmacies sell it as far as I know, definitely sure boots do.

Boots do

cousineddie · 13/12/2018 19:32

I’ll nip into boots ASAP . It’s horrendous , hopefully this is the worst (day one) and it’ll ease off by tomorrow ! Flowers

You can buy it from Boots, but it depends what Boots you go to. A while ago I went to one locally and the woman behind the counter was very nervous and got out the leaflet and asked every question on there to make sure it was appropriate. And REALLY didn't want to sell it to me. (Although I said to her that I was already on a Drs prescription for it, but I had run out unexpectedly, and I needed it urgently for a business trip) . She did sell it to me at the end.

Recently went to a Boots inside a major London station as it became a problem all of a sudden. And the woman behind the counter asked NO questions at all and sold it like paracetamol.

It works out considerably cheaper if you get it on prescription though. (Unlike iron tablets etc, which are cheaper to buy without.)

Oh, and Tena are a GODSEND with this sort of thing. I don't know why Drs, hospital etc don't advise on it. I found out by myself that they are the only thing that can cope with the bad days. I didn't know you can get them prescribed, I use them but they cost a bomb.

cousineddie · 13/12/2018 19:38

It was a wee while ago that they were prescribed to be fair (about 5 or 6 years ago), Id be surprised if I can get them now . The ones I’m using tonight are pretty good although I’m getting through one an hour or so Sad so pack won’t last that long !!

It is a pharmacy only medication but you should be able to buy it. If they’re sometimes a bit twitchy might be worth taking the empty blisters of the prescribed ones you have to reassure them!

THhank you Flowers.

It’s now progressed to D&V, I’m shattered and have a uni assignment to complete by tomorrow ... if anyone knows anything about phonological disorders and speech therapy 😂 .. hopefully fall asleep soon !

Through an entire pack of maxi Tena lady things , that must be a record . I’m wiped out but can’t sleep as too sore and uncomfortable . Have spoken to 111 who are happy it’s just a period and nothing anyone could do tonight - to try and put my legs on a pillow a bit . Wish I could just settle to sleep .

I bought tranexamic acid tablets from Boots online - just was asked what it was for and I said heavy periods and it all went through

MerryGinmas · 14/12/2018 06:12

How are you this morning OP? Sorry to hear you're having a tough time. Tranexamic acid should really help. Is your implant due to run out soon?

If it's still just as heavy I think I'd be giving GP a call, just so you're not tripping about for the tranexamic acid and they can check it's nothing more sinister X Flowers

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 14/12/2018 08:23

It's also worth getting a telephone appt with the doc today and asking them to phone a prescription through to your local chemist.

Ouch44 · 14/12/2018 09:10

Ibuprofen really helps with heavy periods too. It was a revelation! I had flooding for a while when perimenopausal and the Drs gave me something to delay period for holiday but I didn't know about transexamic.

Mooncup is worth investigating too as it holds more.
