How much are you spending on teen daughter’s Christmas presents?

And what are you buying them? We have 3 teenage daughters and I’m interested to know the ‘average’ amount people spend and what their teens are into?

A small MacBook Air, and some makeup and clothes. Probably around £450. She’s the only teenager though, I wouldn’t be spending that much on 3 of them!

pumpkinpie01 · 13/12/2018 12:27

I have 4DC one being DD17 I could shop and shop for her if I could afford it ! I have spent about £160 I think. River island bag, earrings, dressing gown, bracelet, underwear, posh umbrella, bag of home made melts. Plus stocking which is mainly body shop products I bought when there was a 40% deal on. Boys are so much harder !

13 yo dd has produced a lovely table of the things she wants and the most expensive thing on it is a £29.99 handbag Shock
So she will be getting that and a couple of other bits and pieces but I will take her shopping in the New Year.

£130 on clothes, small pair rose gold earrings and a couple of books. Will get some chocolate and toiletries as stocking fillers.

To compare my ds age 9, £80 on Lego and books.

They get more expensive as they get older.

SilverLlama · 13/12/2018 12:32

I have 2 teens (one of each sex) and have spent around £250 on each.

Dd is into gaming, anime, manga and art. Most of her presents are pens of some sort! Not interested in make up or clothes (unless it's a band/horror movie T-shirt or hoodie)

Ds is into gaming, photography, graphic novels/comic books and trainers.

Both are really easy to buy for!

ems137 · 13/12/2018 12:33

My DD is 12 and I've got 3 other (younger) children. I've spent approx £220 on each of them.

I've bought DD lots of clothes, a Fitbit, phone case, (fake) UGG boots, DVD, dressing gown, earrings, ears pierced, book, stationary and bath/beauty stuff.

I'm a good bargain hunter and have an idea of what I'm buying from August/Sept so I look out for discounts etc. I did well on Black Friday for Christmas presents as well.

It was her birthday on the 1st and she got her hair done, more clothes and trainers.

bengalcat · 13/12/2018 12:36

Mine asked for a couple off add on textbooks , some sciency books and something from Lush - ordered from Amazon except for Lush probably spent around £100 .

bengalcat · 13/12/2018 12:37

A couple of not off

TeenTimesTwo · 13/12/2018 12:41

What we spend varies from year to year.
This year is lower than normal as there isn't anything 'special' wanted.

00kitty · 13/12/2018 12:47

shocked at some people's spending. I try and stick to around £100 inc new pair of Xmas PJ's a book and the rest on things she's asked for or will like

DowntonCrabby · 13/12/2018 12:53

Around £150 on DD14, we have a DS5 and have spent roughly the same on him, probably a bit less.

I don’t think I go crazy at all but it’s ridiculous as both sets of GP’s will spend £100+ on each of them too. Both have birthdays within 7 weeks of Christmas too 🤦🏻‍♀️

Armchairanarchist · 13/12/2018 12:54

It comes in around £500 each but everyone is completely different and has different budgets. One is getting a laptop, earrings, makeup and clothes and the other an iPad, Xbox game and clothes. They have friends who receive thousands of pounds worth of gifts.

ifiwasabutterfly · 13/12/2018 13:38

We spend about £100 each on stockings and £200 each on presents- but they do not really have many presents from family which I think makes a huge difference.

ComeOnGordon · 13/12/2018 13:42

So far I’ve only spent less than a 100 on dd (17) but she’s had half her driving lessons paid for this year which wasn’t a small amount of money and the insurance for her to drive my car so she won’t be expecting much more. For the other teenager I’ve spent a bit more cause he’s getting a new bed for Xmas plus other bits.

SimplyPut · 13/12/2018 13:47

Two teens and both around 450/500

iPhone for one plus clothes, aftershave and Xbox game

Clothes, concert tickets, make up, perfume and shoes for DD.

It's definitely more expensive the older they become.

implantsandaDyson · 13/12/2018 13:58

About £250 - this year is an anomaly though, she's getting a bike so it's about £100 more than usual. I don't go above £150 for each child at Christmas.

mrsm43s · 13/12/2018 14:10

I keep a spreadsheet, so I know exactly :)

This year it was £350 each on my two. However, this includes some things which, although they are wanted presents, are also things we'd typically chip in with - i.e. new expensive sports equipment, or musical instrument related items. Also stuff like new PJ/slippers , branded clothes etc in there, which are practical items that we'd probably replace throughout the year if not given at Christmas (but would perhaps not be branded if not given as a gift).

It varies year to year, depending on their wants and needs. It generally seems to go up rather than down, though! Hopefully it will stay at this level now. Pre-teen ages, it was more like £150 - £200 ish.

TBH, everyone's budget is different, and everyone has different ideas of what to give for Christmas, so you can't really compare with others. As long as your DDs like what they are getting, and you can afford it without getting into debt (or causing yourself undue stress) then its all good .

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 14/12/2018 19:35

I have one dd and a bit of lack of living relatives, so I do tend to splurge a bit so there is stuff under the tree. I have spent about £400 this year I think. Main present of a digital piano was about £200 then various books, dvds, hoodies etc, and a reasonable stocking. It does add up very quickly the older they get!

TheHobbitMum · 14/12/2018 19:46

Approx £500 on each. My 17yr old has Levis, Champion hoodie & tshirt, hair straighteners, theatre tickets, smaller clothing, Hotel Chocolat Chocolate liqueur, Urban Decay & XL make up setting spray, posters, cheaper clothing & pj's, albums for record player, perfume and small stocking fillers
