My and dp have booked a much needed weekend in london in feb, without the kids. It will be a nice needed break as we both work nights, and at the moment we barely get any time just us two, i lovely dd lives with us and his ds stays at weekends when dp isn't working.
I am looking for ideas on what to do, hotel is booked on southbank near borough market.
So far he has thought of sky garden, london bridge and tombs and the old operating theatre, obviously we will do borough market. Your thoughts on all of those is appreciated and also any other ideas like places to go, pubs, eating places or anything else we can do. We are coming by train as only hour from us so no driving needed.

You could get a boat down the river to Greenwich. There's the fast boat, MBNA Thames Clipper www.thamesclippers.com/sightseeing-leisure/visit-greenwich or the slower boat (with a running commentary on the riverscape!) City Cruises www.citycruises.com.

Once you're at Greenwich there's so much to see - you could probably spend an entire day if you felt like it! www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/london-areas/greenwich/top-10-things-to-do-in-greenwich

There are a couple of nice pubs, overlooking the river, where you could have lunch. The Trafalgar Tavern www.trafalgartavern.co.uk or The Cutty Sark (pub, not boat!) www.cuttysarkse10.co.uk

Sir John Soane's Museum www.soane.org near Holborn (beware, it's not open on a Mon or Tue).

Maybe go to the theatre or to see a band or go clubbing one night, and for a meal the other night. Old and Young Vic are near where you're staying but obviously there's loads on in general.
One of the restaurants at the Shard is more affordable than the others, nice view. Famous tapas place Brindisa is in Borough Market. Go to a nice cocktail bar? Depends what you're into really.

Room service?

Villanellesproudmum · 13/12/2018 07:26

Clink museum is next to Borough market and good fun and a bit grim.

Nakedavenger74 · 13/12/2018 07:35

Ditch Borough Market unless you want to see tourists 10 deep taking pictures of fish or are keen to buy lots of £20 steak baguettes.

As a South Londoner it used to be the place We bought food. We haven't for at least 4 years as it's just tourist hell of fudge stalls and overpriced take away food. As our fishmonger said when we last saw him 'pictures don't pay the rent'.

That is some ideas to think about, i have climbed the monument in the summer, we had a long day visit to London, i am not too good with heights. We have been to las iguanas bar along the southbank, which was nice, we also did an evening river cruise and went up tower bridge, a bit scarey with the glass floor. So looking for challenging things to do and some nice evening out time with no kids, just nice not to be mum for a couple nights.
My dp is keen on a jack the ripper walk, and also somewhere nice to eat on one of the nights, i don't want anything to fancy though.

I like the slide at the Orbit (Orbital) and the Olympic Park in general (do not, under any circumstance go into Westfield though. It is hell on earth).

My favourite restaurant in London is called Roxie, but it would mean going out to Fulham which would take 30 minutes ish.

Needallthesleep · 13/12/2018 21:41

Also Dim T at London Bridge has fantastic views.

pinkkoala · 13/12/2018 21:44

There is just no way i would even contemplate the slide at Olympic park. My dp would though. I had thought about climb o2, but i paniced when i got up the monument, my legs just went to mush until i calmed down a bit, but the view was amazing when i did eventually walk round.

A guided walk is a brilliant idea op. Check out 241 London do half price tickets for walks and most tourist attractions.

anniehm · 13/12/2018 22:18

What's your likes and dislikes? We do museums and galleries (free, warm, good toilets - important in winter) I love Camden market, great street food there so go at a meal time. We book a show normally, I prefer plays so it's easy to get tickets on the day from the theatre, but the ticket booth in Leicester Square sells left over tickets on the day, or contact theatres directly.

anniehm · 13/12/2018 22:23

Or get a river bus to Greenwich - the maritime museum is there and the observatory - the river bus operate by tfl takes Oyster cards (don't bother with the tourist boats unless you want to eat on board). Best pub imho is the one next to the Lyceum theatre, packed full of theatre memorabilia.

If the weather is hideous or you don’t fancy going out too far, the shipping containers hotel on the south bank has a lovely curzon cinema. Only has about 50 seats, and it’s actually cheaper than my local high street Odeon.
