Help me identify this bug invasion!

Over the last week or so I have been finding these tiny black beetles (?) all over the floor of my kitchen/living room. I am normally pretty live and let live with little critters but I am easily finding 20 of these a day and I have a baby who spends most of his day on the floor and I am feeling increasingly creeped out by them/ panicking that they are poisonous.

They are black and about 2mm long. We have a wood burner and I’m wondering if they’ve come from the pile of logs that we have in the living room. I am feeling itchy just writing this Xmas Sad

If anyone can identify the critters (and reassure me t hat they aren’t going to eat me and my family) I’d be so grateful!

I just googled - could they be black carpet beetles? Google says they’re 3-7mm

ArseholesOnToast · 12/12/2018 18:38

We had these. They were in the kitchen first and then they were marching up the living room wall like a little bug army on parade.

I couldn’t work out where they were coming from until I opened a bag of hamster food. Riddled with them.

I chucked it out, hoovered them all up and threw out the hoover bag. Never saw another one.

No idea what they were...sorry.

Could be a wood boring weevil? Look here: www.timberwise.co.uk/2009/06/woodworm-identification-advice-from-the-woodworm-specialists/

Thank you for the replies! I seriously can’t stop itching as I think about them. Also, a few days ago I woke up with a rash all over my stomach, like red pin pricks. Oh my god have these critters been eating me??! I only have the rash on my stomach and had been wearing pyjamas, plus so far I’ve only seen them downstairs.

Don’t think that they are either of the bugs that have been suggested as the bodies on those examples seems more rounded and the things in my house seem to have a sort of pointed head if you see what I mean. Thank you very much for the suggestions though.

They are weevils (pointed snout). Maybe flour weevils?

ShatnersBassoon · 12/12/2018 18:54

They look like the little beetle things you sometimes get in logs. Do you burn wood?

JoiningUpTheDots · 12/12/2018 18:56

@NanTheWiser I think you’re right! They look exactly like what I have. Anyone know how I get rid? I take it I need to throw out all flour and open packets of any food? This is going to be expensive...

If they have a long pointy nose then they are weevils and may have come from the wood pile.

Unless you have a large house plant somewhere in the house, or a christmas tree in soil in a put? Vine weevil grubs eat roots, and the adults hatch out and look about the size of your photo. They scurry about quite quickly too. Can't enlarge it enough to be sure.

organiseandbrewery · 12/12/2018 18:57

Put??? Pot.

JoiningUpTheDots · 12/12/2018 19:16

I wish they were ones that had come in from the wood as that would gross me out much less for some reason, but they look just like the grain weevils when I google them.

So I seem to have found the source of the infestation, yuck yuck yuck. Was having a good hoover round the kitchen and living room this morning. I have a big tin of bird food that I shifted a bit to try to hoover round and a fair few were crawling around the base of it.

I dared to open the lid for the briefest of seconds and there were loads of them. Oh god I cannot stop twitching as I write this, I’m convinced they’re all in my clothes.

I’ve dumped the tin in the garden for the time being. Please tell me that I have a good chance of getting rid of the critters altogether now that I’ve removed the tin?! I’ve just found my first weevil upstairs. I hope they’ve not decided to colonise the upstairs of my house Sad

Does anyone know what I should do to ensure that I’ve sent them packing for good? Planning to have a thorough hoover and mop every day. Anything else I should try?

Grain weevils. I had them in bird treats, and they were also in a batch of bird seed. Harmless but I dumped it all. I first found them in the hall and thought the house was being eaten until I realised they had travelled from the bird seed.

It was about a year ago so it looks as if they are still being sold along with the seed. I would either put the seed into a tightly closed container and freeze for a while or put it outside for the birds. Couldn't freeze mine as no room in the freezer so it went out instead.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 13/12/2018 17:05

Do you have indoor birds? Or other pets at all?

If not you could just use a fly spray or if you have one a flea spray for pet fleas. It will kill other insects too so remove your spiders to safety if you like spiders. Obviously if you have birds you won't use a spray. Diatomaceous earth would do it and not harm birds.

They might just die off if there is no food though.

WishIwasanastronaut · 13/12/2018 17:08

I had these too, also from bird food.

Once I’d got rid of the bird food, they disappeared quickly.

I did freeze the kids toys and all grain foodstuffs just to be in the safe side though.

motherone · 13/12/2018 17:13

Check yr household plants also. I had vine weeval (think you have a different sort though) and had to get rid of an indoor tree I had for nearly 10 years as it was covered and multiple treatments didn't work. Spread to a few plants I had but the treatment was more successful with them. You can also get a treatment for critters that is animal and baby safe I think best to ask at a hardware store though as I know I got one though it was pet safe not positive it was baby safe

HeyListen · 13/12/2018 17:17

I was just about to say to check bird seed, we had them in an unopened pack but they burst their way out. Caught it early luckily.
