And if so, what's the weather like??! Desperate for a holiday abroad - haven't had a holiday either home or away in 5yrs and am totally feeling it!! - but DH's work means we can only really go around May time so the only doubt in my mind is whether it will be nice enough weather...??

We live in Cornwall and May is often lovely here then so am hopeful but just wanted reassurance!

Do you mean Biarritz?

EverybodyKeepCool · 12/12/2018 16:36

Depends where you mean... We've been to the Vendée several times during May half term and you can get fabulous weather or it can be cool or rainy. If it is cool and rainy then activities are limited.
Further down towards Arcachon/Biarritz/Bordeaux/Toulouse and your chances of fab weather increase. We used to live in that area and had amazing weather through most of May and June.

How far south and how far west? We’ve been between Bordeaux and Toulouse at that time of year and it was lovely and warm and we had the swimming lake to ourselves because it was still too cold for the French. That said we’ve been in July and it’s rained...

Went last year, far south of Toulouse. It rained and rained and stormed and was cold.

We're going to southern Spain instead this year

I've been to carcassonne many times in may, which is south/West Mediterranean side.
The weather has always been perfect around 24, although it has gone up to high 20s quite a few times.

Mentounasc · 12/12/2018 16:57

I was in the southeast corner of France last year and this year in that week - and it was just delightful. Around 25 degrees, so warm enough to eat outside or sunbathe or swim in the sea, but without the intense heat of summer.

Sicily is great in May.

TonTonMacoute · 12/12/2018 17:16

We go to the Côte d'Azur that week every year, we have always had lovely weather. We might get the odd day of showers or very strong winds, but never for the whole

TonTonMacoute · 12/12/2018 17:17

*whole week.

OrchidInTheSun · 12/12/2018 17:21

I think you were lucky Mentonasc. I was just east of Carcassonne and the weather was absolutely dreadful in May half term.

I have to say that I think it was quite unusual - I've been in and about in the region for years in May half term and it's usually been gorgeous. I've honestly have never had such awful weather. But it has made me rethink plans for next year and further south is definitely more reliable weather-wise. And if I have a week with kids and a villa with a pool, I don't want to be stuck inside, wishing I'd brought a jumper

Thanks everyone! We are looking at somewhere between Bordeaux and Biarritz. Good reports so far for this area it seems then (Only poor orchid not had a generally good run!), so we may be on! ☀️😊☀️

We're going south France as opposed to further afield as driving, and west as opposed to east as we surf (so need the Atlantic side) but accept this means we may have more chance of wind/rain, but as we live in Cornwall so are pretty used to that 😂 - just don't want it to be every day!

Yes. Between Carcasonne and the Spanish border in May. It was perfect. Warm but not too hot and a little rain but it wasn’t a washout.

Pavlova31 · 12/12/2018 19:48

A friend lives in Anglet just down the road from Biarritz . It seems a nice little town . Also has a camping site nearby if I remember correctly.

anniehm · 12/12/2018 20:42

The Atlantic coast is more hit or miss than the med but if surfing is your thing you don't want it too calm! Take wetsuits as the Atlantic is cold.

We've been to Bordeaux in August 2 years in a row and had 5 out of 7 days be overcast/rainy each time and hottest day only about 25 degrees. Don't think you can guarantee hot weather unless you are right down in the southernmost part.
