“Well, as long as you’re happy”

Does anyone else hate this phrase?

It seems to be the get out clause for doing whatever you like:

Cheated on your family? As long as your happy that’s all that matters

Got back with your abusive ex? Well as long as your happy it doesn’t matter

We were having a conversation today in the office, a colleague has done something really fucking stupid, ignored all advice against doing this thing and just dived head first into a really shit situation. Two other colleagues sage advice of “well as long as your happy nothing else matters”....except it kind of does.

Any constructive criticism or advice is seen as unsupportive of these people’s happiness.

The whole phrase is just a blanket excuse of “we all know you’re being a dick but we’re going to pretend you aren’t”

Yes. Very passive aggressive

Isn’t it just what people say when they really aren’t / don’t want to get invested enough in a situation to open a discussion or express an actual opinion? Unless this is a work matter with repercussions for colleagues and employer, it sounds pretty wise of your colleagues to stay uninvolved in whatever shit is somebody else’s bother.

I think it is more of a way of closing down the conversation than it is an endorsement.

This. It’s just saying that you’re not going to waste your energy trying to get them to see sense.

Awful phrase, it's just as bad as "happy mum happy baby".

MinorProphet · 11/12/2018 18:58

I quite like it (although I'm not sure I've ever said it) because to those with ears, it says 'You are selfishly considering only your own happiness in this' ... while the person you are saying it to thinks it validates their choice, because they really do think that their own happiness is the main thing.
