Does anyone have might storage heaters

We love in a big lovely house that still has night storage heaters. We have looked into getting them replaced but just can't afford it. I hate them. I miss having radiators that I can dry the odd item of clothing on. I hate how unpleasantly hot it is in the mornings. Yet if I turn them off it's really cold at night. They are particularly shit as they are so old so the temperature isn't very controllable. DH thinks may be we should replace them with better quality ones as thats cheaper than a whole new system. Any ideas or thoughts? We do have an open fire too which is nice.

I don't know what's best about replacing them but with your current heaters do you know you can turn up the input to high and the output to low? Then hopefully there will be some more heat left in them for the evenings. We used to turn the output down quite low overnight and turn them up every morning, then turn them down again before bed, a bit of a faff.

My dh managed to persuade our old church to replace their ancient night storage heaters with new ones and it was much better. Unfortunately they went a bit more towards the cheaper end of the market rather than putting in the best ones so it could have been better if they'd spent a little more for the better heaters.

The new heaters were miles better than the old, if you were to change them for new versions I would recommend not scrimping on cheaper heaters, but put in the best ones you can afford as it will make a difference, they are also more controllable and smaller than they used to be.

We used to have the old brown/cream bulky things in our old house before we moved to our current house with radiators Smile. To dry clothes that didn't go in the tumble dryer I would load the clothes horse and stand it in front of, but not too close to, the heater in the passageway as there was plenty of space, do you have somewhere you could do that?

Also, you could look at the new night storage heaters online to see what's available now, means you don't have to talk to high pressure salespeople. I think Fischer Future Heat are good at explaining what you can get, we had one of their leaflets through the door a few months ago and I was surprised at the stuff on it, but I don't know how good they are as have never used them.

I absolutely hate ours. They're both expensive and shite. I'd get rid of ours in a heartbeat if I could.

My old office had storage heaters. They were indeed expensive and shite. We were always second guessing what the weather would be the next day. If we forgot or for it wrong it was either freezing or roasting.

Depending on your income there are companies who will replace them for you.

We have storage heaters in our current house (rented). I don't think I've quite got used to them but we generally don't have a problem. I've found turning them down rather than off works better for avoiding the freeze after boiling. Also keeping certain doors closed overnight.

Two of ours appear to have a timer - they are the ones which end up either scalding or freezing rooms. The others just have a dial for how cold it is, or isn't as well as the early/late/boost heat dial. We leave them on late and don't touch that dial. We sometimes alter the one for how cold it is.

Personally I think I'd replace them all with top of the range ones rather than cheap and cheerful.

Otherwise you are looking st a completely new system and the resultant work that will go with it.
