DS came home injured from school last night group of boys in rugby whilst teacher wasnt looking were deliberately far too rough kicking him, slapping his face jumping on his back. Resulted in swollen ankle, pain to his lower back and off school and a Drs appointment this morning to check his back. Im fuming and so upset. He did tell the teacher he was hurt so teacher is aware but I feel I need to discuss further. Also he does an outside sport which he is trialling to play for England, final trial is in 2 weeks, if he's not fit due to his injuries that's 6 months hard work down the drain. I totally understand that some sports are rougher than others but these injuries were a result of pupils messing around. I just feel I should email the teacher and logg this with him and school

Of course it’s not okay. You definitely need to send an email to school. I’m sorry I don’t have the time to help word it at the moment but thought I would bump this for you.

SylviaAndSydney · 11/12/2018 09:17

I absolutely would get in contact with the school. Slapping him and deliberately hurting him? Definitely needs addressing, are they aware he’s trialling for another sport, there may be some jealousy there?

Wolfiefan · 11/12/2018 09:18

He was assaulted. Of course you’re not being unreasonable. Poor kid. Hope he heals fast. Be sure to document all injuries before he does so.

flowerpot1000000 · 11/12/2018 09:21

I agree I think jealousy is a factor. But that aside and I understand rugby is a rough sport but his injuries were deliberate not caused by playing rugby yesterday. So he's off school...he had 3 days off with swollen glands 2 weeks ago and now off again Ive got to take the day off work and potentially he wont be able to do his final trial

There’s a huge difference between accidentally being hit by a hockey stick (ouch!) and deliberately being assaulted when the teacher isn’t watching.
TBH I would say it’s a safeguarding concern if a group of kids can inflict such injuries without the teacher even noticing.

Ask for a copy of their risk assessments.

Name the boys and ask what they are going to do to keep your DS safe at school.

Ask for a copy of their bullying policy or access it on their website and go through it in detail.

DobbinsVeil · 11/12/2018 09:33

Your poor DS, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Have you considered what outcome(s) you want? I think it's helpful to provide an account of what happened then separately list what you would like to happen.

flowerpot1000000 · 11/12/2018 09:43

Yes I dont want him with this group of boys, the teacher he likes very much and DS is panicking that he will get into trouble but he needs to supervise these kids!

He does need to ensure the safety of the class. Is DS going to be off school all day? If he’s already had three whole days off for swollen glands I think I’d want to try and get him in if he could manage even a couple of hours

flowerpot1000000 · 11/12/2018 09:56

Will be off today, Ive rang absence dept and explained. Im hoping to get him to school tomorrow with an understanding he can sit in student services and do work etc

Poor kid. Can’t he walk on the ankle?

JeanMichelBisquiat · 11/12/2018 09:57

Obviously you're not overreacting - what the kids did was assault (you've not given ages, but I'm assuming they're secondary age).

This assault has absolutely nothing to do with the rugby. Not only should the kids be suspended for this (they certainly would at my DCs' school), you could also involve the police.

Again - you're being far too reasonable. Not a game. Assault.

AppleKatie · 11/12/2018 10:01

This needs to go above the class teachers head.

An assault leading to doctors treatment and potentially impacting your DSs life (England trial) is a serious bullying incident. Head of pastoral care if not the head her/himself I think.

I agree with the advice about writing out the facts of what happened, the consequences for your son and what you would like to happen.

We had a similar thing with ds2 who was playing for his school, he plays for an academy as well and some of the other team decided to target him and were telling one of them to “take him out”. The other boy kicked him so hard when he ran past him, it caused ds2 leg to swell up really badly and the doctor said it was a haematoma. It took 8 weeks to heal. I emailed the school who were amazing and launched an investigation.
Definitely speak to the school. It’s not a case of being injured whilst playing, it’s a deliberate assault and needs to be dealt with

Have copied Head of Year in and sent. Thank you for your responses, Ive done the right thing I hope

Hope you get a good outcome OP, and I hope he’s feeling better soon and the trial goes ahead as expected.

Wolfiefan · 11/12/2018 10:41

You have. Hope he’s better soon. And good luck with the trials.

AppleKatie · 11/12/2018 12:57

Well done OP, hopefully the school will now deal with it really well for your DS.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 11/12/2018 13:05

Definitely the right thing, OP - make sure the school take it seriously (you can always remind them that, over the age of 10, it could also be a police matter).

Hope your DS feels much better soon, and fingers crossed for his trial!

flowerpot1000000 · 11/12/2018 13:59

Does anyone know if the teacher ratio is right 35 kids to 1 teacher onsite on a rugby pitch? Im assuming it is as a classroom would be the same wouldnt it
