Anyone Else's Older Teenagers Not Drink?

Icequeen01 · 10/12/2018 23:51

I just wondered if anyone else has an older teenager who is tee-total or if it is as unusual as all my friends say. My DS19 is completely tee-total and has absolutely no interest in trying it. I was certainly drinking a little at his age but only got drunk a few times and these days only drink very occasionally when out with friends. I'm happy he doesn't drink to be honest as he drives so that's one less worry but I'm starting to get irritated by the comments of some of my friends who say it's weird.

My 19year old daughter is tee total.

Looks like it’s just our two @TitsNnails!

My 20 year old ds1 has never had alcohol.

TeenTimesTwo · 11/12/2018 12:55

My 19yo DD too.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 11/12/2018 12:57

I was tee total in my late teens too. The comments are endless, from dick heads.

SummerGems · 11/12/2018 12:59

I was teetotal as a teen as well and still am in my 40’s.

My ds is only sixteen but shows very little interest.

Read an article recently though about how more and more teenagers aren’t drinking these days so IMO it’s not as unusual as it used to be.

My DS19 is another non drinker. He had 4 cans of cider for 6 months that he had one off. He then purchased another 10 3 months ago and they are still in his room unopened. He says he's too tired after working but I think he just doesn't like the taste very much and just keeps the cans to fit in if his friends ask if he having a drink (he can say yeah I have some cans I might have later). My DS 24 isn't a big drinker either. Maybe once every few months on nights out. They take after me, I like the occasional drink but not every week.

My 22 year old son doesn’t drink and my 21 year old son rarely drinks.
Most of their friends fall into the rarely drink camp.

skippy67 · 11/12/2018 13:08

Dr is nearly 18 and teetotal.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/12/2018 13:09

One of my teens (almost 18) has no interest in booze - tried it a couple of times at parties but didn't particularly like how it made her feel - now she drives and is the group taxi which she's more than happy about as they all chip in for petrol.

Nothing odd about it, each to their own.

Middlrm · 11/12/2018 13:09

My cousin is... it’s not weird some people don’t react well to alcohol or don’t like the taste why drink if you don’t enjoy it??

Johnnycomelately1 · 11/12/2018 13:10

Something like 25% of 18-25 year olds are now tee total so it's absolutely not unusual.

I was tee total in my teens and still am at 24, save for a glass of champagne at a wedding maybe or new year's eve... Never liked the taste and always feared the feeling of loss of control!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/12/2018 13:14

Young chap in my office doesn't drink. Not interested, apparently. He's 22. Never did at uni either.

Autumnsunrise · 11/12/2018 13:15

18 yo dd rarely drinks.

Rhiannon13 · 11/12/2018 13:18

My DD is nearly 18 and doesn't drink. Many of her friends don't either. It's not unusual.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 11/12/2018 13:20

My 19 yo doesn't drink, he's not at all interested in it. His cousin who is 30 has never drunk either.

Zoflorabore · 11/12/2018 13:20

My ds is 16 in March and won't touch alcohol.
Not unusual? I agree. However, he has been made to feel like a total outcast at school recently as wasn't invited to two parties and was a bit upset by it. Turns out it's because he doesn't drink! He's 15 ffs.

I was drinking at his age and wouldn't have a problem if he had a little drink at parties but he's seriously not interested. He has AS and says that he wants to be in control of himself and for now he's not ready which is great. I just think it's unfair that he's in year 11 and is made to feel weird for not drinking.

I actually hope he remains this way but will let him make the decision for himself when the time comes.

icannotremember · 11/12/2018 13:25

My 19 year old cousin was teetotal and then made some different friends. He enjoys a drink now. The difference between his group and my generation, I think, is that drinking is OK, getting a bit drunk is OK, but getting out of control drunk is not acceptable. My friends and I used to get blasted, crawling home unable to speak properly drunk at that age (thank you in advance to anyone who feels the need to tell me how unhealthy, unsafe and unattractive that is, but please don't waste your time, I really have heard it all before). His don't go that far.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/12/2018 13:29

My 20 yo and 18 yo dses don’t touch a drip. That may or may not change. Ds1 aged 22 is a bit of a binge drinker.

MadameJosephine · 11/12/2018 13:30

My 22yo son is tee total, he’s never had any interest in alcohol at all. He’s at uni and has friends that don’t drink either, it’s not unusual apparently

AdamNichol · 11/12/2018 13:32

I taught VI Form for a decade, and watched mobile phones and instagram persona outstrip cars and booze as the top items in the teen wish lists.
There is a view that nightclubs, the Ibiza/AyaNappa scene, and binge drinking have been culled in the youth by the need to maintain a perfect social media image at all times.

AdamNichol · 11/12/2018 13:34

For my age group - the pub/club and the booze offered the dutch courage to attempt a social interaction with an attractive person.

These days, the initial reach out is online - which offers a safe space (as compared to cold face to face hello). By the time face to face occurs, much connection has been made; leaving pub/club/booze a bit redundant

Cleo18 · 11/12/2018 13:36

Dc, 17 and 21 - both teetotal. 21 yr old used to have the odd drink but never liked it. Doesn't bother now.
