I did post this in the news but no one really noticed so reposted here

WARNINGvideo is quite distressing to watch

The reason for the police doing this has not get really been given but I don’t care. No police officer should be abusing their position of power and doing this!!

What do you think the police should do when they’re attempting to arrest an adult who refuses to let go of their child, endangering their own child? Should they arrest the child too? Of course they need to separate the adult from the child when she’s resisting arrest.

Nobody was hurting her son in the video. She’s on the floor resisting arrest and screaming at police officers using a child as an excuse.

Valasca · 10/12/2018 20:41

I mean nobody was hurting her son while she’s screaming it accusing them of doing so in the start.

HavelockVetinari · 10/12/2018 20:44

Using a child as a human shield is disgusting.

Soubriquet · 10/12/2018 20:46

No she shouldn’t have used her child as a shield

But yanking the child away is not on either.

So even though you don’t know what happened then it’s obviously the polices fault?

And as for all those idiots with their phones out........

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/12/2018 20:48

Tell us what you would have done OP? You know- with all that experience you should have a good idea of what would have worked in such a situation...

SemperIdem · 10/12/2018 20:48

What else were they supposed to do? She was using her young son as a shield to prevent her arrest. That isn’t normal behaviour. What had she done to result in being arrested, with her child in tow?

TwitToWoo · 10/12/2018 20:50

You cannot see them “yanking” the child. You can see them trying to remove him/her but it’s impossible to see what is happening when it all gets more violent suddenly.

For all you know, she was doing something that was hurting the child and they became desperate to remove him/her.

The baby is now in care and the woman has been charged with child endangerment, amongst other things. So maybe reserve judgement.

Children do have to be removed from their parents arms sometimes. Absurd to say it should never happen.

FuckNuggets · 10/12/2018 20:51

And yet if she was white they wouldn't have treated her like that! When is that country's police going to start treating black people with a bit of dignity and respect? Absolutely disgusting. Angry

Nicknacky · 10/12/2018 20:51

I have removed a child from a mothers arms before. It had to be done for the child safety although thankfully that mother realised that fighting would have been a stupid option.

Soubriquet · 10/12/2018 20:51

It says allegedly, the police were called because the woman refused to get off the floor.

That I don’t believe. Surely no one will ring the police and come because of that.

But police officers should have negotiated with her to release her son.

They could have blockaded her to stop her running off and then talked her down.

Pulling on him, with her pulling back, must have caused him some pain.

Let alone hearing his mum scream like that must have scared the poor boy

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 10/12/2018 20:52

It's awful. But come on, all of that would have been avoided if she'd just stood up.

Who the hell would put their young child through that just to prove a point ?? I'd have stood up and THEN complained.

Nicknacky · 10/12/2018 20:52

Oh and now they are racist!

FFS

Nicknacky · 10/12/2018 20:53

You have no idea what they had already tried to do as the video conveniently (as always) doesn’t show what happened.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 10/12/2018 20:53

FuckNuggets.......most of the officers were black.

We can't always use racism as an excuse for shitty behaviour. That's just lazy. Hmm

GinIsIn · 10/12/2018 20:53

Considering the mother has been arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, I don’t imagine the police had very much choice but to try anything to get the child away.

Redcrayonisthebest · 10/12/2018 20:54

@FuckNuggets you have no evidence that this is racially motivated Hmm
It's upsetting to watch, yes but as pp say there's a strong possibility that the child was in danger and they had to remove him for his own safety. If that's the case, they would act the same no matter what the colour of the child.

TwitToWoo · 10/12/2018 20:55

The video starts halfway through the incident - and that report says it’s unclear what happened before.

Possibly (probably) they did try and negotiate. What are they supposed to do if she simply kept refusing?

She shouldn’t have held onto him like that. She is as much to blame -more so - but it’s the police you’re decided to blame?

Squidgee · 10/12/2018 20:57

the baby is not in care, its with family.

She was arrested because she refused to sit on a chair and wanted to sit on the floor while waiting to be seen... and staff felt that required calling the police.

There was NO reason for the officers to drag her child out of her arms in such a brutal manner, none at all.

The child endangerment charge is because she wouldn't let him go, not because she's a danger to him ffs.

Angrybird345 · 10/12/2018 21:00

Ffs....

Stompythedinosaur · 10/12/2018 21:01

I think the situation which lead to the stand off is very sad (I believe her benefits had been stopped, meaning she couldn't pay for childcare and would loose her job).

However I think that she was failing to protect her baby by using them in that way.

TwitToWoo · 10/12/2018 21:03

A child can still be “in care” and with family. It says s/he was “taken into custody” with a family member and child services informed. This is probably the same kind of arrangement we have where a child is subject to a place of safety order & placed with family where possible.

She wasn’t arrested for sitting on the floor. There was more to it than that.

You also don’t know what the child endangerment charge was for.

RebelWitchFace · 10/12/2018 21:04

Can't comment fully as I have no idea what happened before the video.
There are several situations that would warrant removing a child from their mum immediately.
There are situations that escalate stupidly.
There are situations where the police use excessive force unnecessarily.

She did use her son as a human shield though. That's the only thing we can definitely see and it's not ok.

Valasca · 11/12/2018 07:02

The staff called the police because she refused to get off the floor, was creating a hazard for other patrons and she refused to leave. Says so in the link you provided.

It’s not a public sidewalk, it’s private premises. And of course the police would come out for that. Confused. Trespassing is also a criminal offence in States, unlike here.

I don’t understand why you’ve decided the staff would have motive to lie and don’t believe it. What’s the point of posting about this if you don’t believe the story?

MissyCooper · 11/12/2018 07:06

Oh I remember seeing a woman be arrested in our local city. I was just walking past so don’t know what the chat was. But it was horrible. Wee boy must have been 3 or 4 and was in bits as she was being put into the car. The whole time she was calmly saying to him “everything is fine. It’s alright. Your daddy’s coming for you” but I’ll never forget that boys terror.
