You can make Baileys with cream, condensed milk, Camp coffee and a cup of whiskey. It’s unbelievably easy and delicious.

For the main meal we always have roast chicken, (preferred to turkey) pigs in blankets, pan fried sprouts with bacon and chestnuts, gingerbread stuffing, pork and chestnut stuffing, honey roasted carrots and parsnips, roast potatoes, braised red cabbage with cranberryand port and apple sauces. Followed by homemade xmas pudding or a pavlova/other dessert. A fry up of lefftovers the following day (including the xmas pud!) is the best bit and I always make sure I've prepared enough for us and for my parents to take home with them for boxing day.

Other things over the period include a baked gammon joint, cheese and biscuits, smoked salmon, home made pies and quiches, yule log christmas cake, sausage rolls, mince pies. prawn cocktails, sandwiches with nice bread buns.

Snacks usually nuts, crisps and chocolates.

After a few days we are usually craving something like beans on toast though!

caperplips · 12/12/2018 10:10

I love all of these suggestions but the one that has really stopped me in my tracks is the suggestion of hard liquorice sticks for g&t - i am SOOOOOO doing that this year - genius idea!

beela · 12/12/2018 10:58

All (most) of the above, plus shepherds pie at some point. Ever since ds misheard the title of the Shepherds Pipe Carol Xmas Grin

championquartz · 12/12/2018 11:16

Smoked salmon. Decent stuff.
Sometimes with Guinness bread (my own). A match made in culinary heaven.
Homemade onion marmalade. On whatever takes yer fancy. Also handy to have in the fridge if people unexpectedly call - slice one of those par-baked baguettes, top each slice with onion marmalade, slice of that log goats cheese on top, grill or oven til bubbling. Everyone gobbles it and thinks you're a genius. Grin

championquartz · 12/12/2018 11:18

Oh and mint matchmakers!! Love them at Christmas.

ScarlettSahara · 12/12/2018 11:47

Champion - I’ve never heard of the par-baked baguettes. Are they in the frozen section at the supermarket? (Would like to appear genius in the kitchen with your cheese idea -Grin.
BlueStocking Is you rasperry roulade homemade?
Glad you posted this OP
Still hoping for recipes for chestnut stuffing & Charlotte Rousse. Never like Xmas cake when Iwas little but just loved my Mum’s dessert.

Make sure you get your parent’s/grandparents recipes. Feel so nostalgic for the lost recipes.

hellswelshy · 12/12/2018 13:25

Yum to all this! We always do a big ham, boiled in spices then glazed and roasted - Gordon Ramsey recipe I think? Lots of cheese. Pate. Crisps. Satsumas. Nuts to crack. Bubble and squeak on boxing day with ham. Turkey sandwiches with picallili. Trifle. Baileys! And probably some Gaviscon Xmas Grin

MilkyCuppa · 12/12/2018 13:42

ALL THE CHEESES!
With port and pate.

Lauden chocolates (utterly amazing)
M&S glittery smoked salmon
Chocolate Block red wine
Voakes pies (delivered by courier the week before Xmas)

championquartz · 12/12/2018 17:26

Scarlett - the baguettes (they’re Demi baguettes) are in the bread section, it’s long term-ish bread. Shove it in the oven to brown and finish baking. It’s only ok to taste. But with the onion marmalade and a thin slice of goats cheese - magic!Grin

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 20/12/2018 18:57

Nononononono33 · 20/12/2018 19:04

I’m so late to this thread, but...they do mini Colin caterpillars at M&S??

OopsInamechangedagain · 20/12/2018 19:29

To PPs who make bubble & squeak - is this using leftover roast potatoes or do you make mash specially?

user1457017537 · 20/12/2018 20:01

Left over roast potatoes and any left over vegetables, although I’m not keen on left over parsnips. I always heat up in microwave for 5 mins before ad it makes it all easier to cut and mash.

user1457017537 · 20/12/2018 20:06

Yes they do mini Colin the Caterpillars at M&S they are with the normal cakes.

YesIDidNameChangeForThis · 20/12/2018 20:11

Trifle for breakfast on Boxing day. You have to.

OopsInamechangedagain · 20/12/2018 21:34

Thanks @user1457017537
