Hello! I've found a random toad/frog in my enclosed all stone garden. He was sitting on the stone path looking stunned. Not hurt I don't think. Can't leave him out or the cats will eat him advice please?

Iknowthatguy · 10/12/2018 18:35

Oh he might have been dropped by a bird Sad

LilMadAgain · 10/12/2018 18:37

No tongue hanging out! He is alert and slightly squidgy of skin, he blinks occasionally. I'm trying to upload a pic, bloody wifi.

They appear from nowhere. I have a visitor that comes back to my garden to spawn in the bird bath every year. I also have a stone walled garden, mid terrace nowhere near waterways or open nature spaces. They find their way out eventually.

LilMadAgain · 10/12/2018 18:42

What the hell do I do with my new guest? Not like I have locusts going spare in the pantry.

aww

if he's not hurt, can you take him to a pond, wherever is nearest?! I'm not an expert so I guess it depends if he is a frog or a toad.

LilMadAgain · 10/12/2018 18:43

sit I don't mind him staying in my garden but the cats are lethal and it would break my heart to find him deposited outside the door by a well meaning moggy Sad

He's a lovely toad! Are there any gardens nearby you can pop him in?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/12/2018 18:48

Forgot to say, they do hibernate so anywhere with a log-pile or similar would be perfect.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 10/12/2018 18:53

Put him back outside in a safe space, they don't live in water they just go to water to breed. Do you have a shed in the garden? They quite often live in the space under sheds.

SeekingClosure · 10/12/2018 18:55

Aw he's gorgeous, I haven't seen a toad for years! Yes as pp said, find a sheltered corner for him where there might be some insects for him, and some leaves or wood to hide in. He doesn't need to be in a pond so don't worry about that.

witchy89 · 10/12/2018 19:05

Toads hibernate over the winter so just pop him somewhere like a compost heap or under some decking. He won't need a pond. They're also nocturnal so maybe pop him out once the cats are in? (If the cats stay in over night?) or a neighbours garden instead? In my experience toads are fairly placid so I wouldn't be too worried about him being docile, they aren't mad hoppy things like frogs, they crawl!

parrotonmyshoulder · 10/12/2018 19:09

He’s lovely. Find him a nice damp place to live.

He will repay you by eating all the slugs in your garden. We used to have a whopper in our veg patch and never had a slug!

LilMadAgain · 10/12/2018 19:51

He's beautiful isn't he? Envy I also haven't seen one since I was a kid. I physically cannot walk longer than a few meters and certainly not on the hills but my neighbour is taking him to the edge of a very small wooded area now :) thanks everyone.

He's terribly handsome

AwkwardPaws27 · 10/12/2018 22:11

We had a toad. Idiot cat tried to eat him*, and ended up frothing at the mouth, and spent the rest of the afternoon high as a kite... He doesn't try to eat toads now.
Turns out some toads produce a toxin that makes cats and dogs nauseous and occasionally high.

*I didn't find our toad afterwards so assumed he made his escape after drugging up the cat.

LilMadAgain · 11/12/2018 02:21

awkward I only found out today for the first time that toads do not give you warts Blush
