I'm about to start Sertraline, will it really make me worse for a couple of weeks?

I must admit, I'm a bit scared. I was on citalopram for 12 years, but took myself off in June. Anxiety and panic attacks have returned terribly, spoke to doc today, asked for something other than citalopram as I felt it made me too numb.
So, for those of you that take it, what can I expect? Flowers

I will do :) are you taking yours more for anxiety or depression if you don't mind me asking? Did you suffer panic attacks?

I thought it was anxiety but scored pretty highly on the depression test as well. Yes to the occasional panic attack

Sertaline made me ill. The worst I've ever been - suicidal, irritable, angry.

I am now on Fluoxetine after a trial of various meds and am now "OK"

I found it made my face feel like I’d taken an E. As in gurning like a clubber in the 1990’s. I got through lots of chewing gum for a couple of weeks. It also made me feel a bit nauseous for a couple of days, but then it was fine.

Loopylou6 · 11/12/2018 22:46

Thanks danger, I hope you're feeling better

I had two weeks of paranoia. It was bloody awful but bearable by keeping my mouth shut and head down for a short period. The sertraline has helped massively with anxiety depression ocd ptsd. Low dose made big difference

InsomniacAnonymous · 11/12/2018 23:28

What strength are you on, OP? I'm desperate for my dosage to be changed to 100mg. The doctor said I should get a telephone appt. 3 weeks after I start taking them, but that's Christmas Day, so it will have to be sorted somehow before that.

I've got to go to the doctor tomorrow to get a 24 hr blood pressure monitor fitted and I'm so anxious about sorting the prescription out that my blood pressure's going to be as high as it was when i saw the doctor last week. Sad

50 insomniac. You need to demand an emergency apt

@Loopylou6 and @thenextsmallthing, how are getting on today?

I hope you are both okay.

I have finally plucked up the courage and took me first one today. Feel rather like I've jumped off a cliff! And have a splitting headache!

Loopylou6 · 12/12/2018 16:12

@luckingfovely I'm not too bad thank you, I find I feel worse when I first wake up, really shakey and anxious with a knot in my tummy, but at least I'm not feeling like a panic attack is imminent all the time.
I'm really pleased that you've took your first one and the headache is completely normal. Here's to hopefully onwards and upwards Flowers

day 3 and still side effects but hanging on in there. Shaky hands and woke up in middle of night again

Loopylou6 · 12/12/2018 17:11

I have shakey hands too. Can you try taking it before bed?

Luckingfovely · 12/12/2018 17:12

So glad you're both coping with it, hope things settle really soon.

Loopylou6 · 01/01/2019 15:12

Just checking in to see how you're doing, my anxiety is cranking up again, its been just over weeks now

OP posts:
Luckingfovely · 02/01/2019 10:30

Hi @Loopylou6 I am on three weeks today. Have been really up and down. The first two weeks my anxiety was definitely worse, and I felt ill and exhausted all the time.

I thought it had settled a bit over the last few days but was terrible yesterday and DH says I was screaming in my sleep all night.

I have a tight and panicked feeling in my chest, which is different to before. But I do think my over thinking and over analysing has reduced.

So I'm staying with it for now and hoping it will turn out to be worthwhile. Christmas and NY is obviously a fairly crazy time, so I'm hoping I'll see more benefits in January.

How have you been feeling?

Loopylou6 · 06/01/2019 19:52

Hi @Luckingfovely, I just realised I've been on them since the 11th December. I've felt frigging AWFUL today, I don't think I can bare it :(
Hope you're feeling better today

Started December 2nd. My side effects lasted a month and were unpleasant but bearable. Increased anxiety especially in the first 2 hours after waking, extreme sleepiness, loss of appetite. I now feel almost back to normal and my anxiety is much better.

ihatethecold · 06/01/2019 20:02

my 15 yr old dd takes sertraline for severe anxiety. Its really helping but the awful gastric side effects won't go away after 6 weeks so the psychiatrist will change it to Floexitine next week.

Loopylou6 · 06/01/2019 20:41

Hi both, I'm glad you're feeling better. @haverhill, that gives me abit of hope.
@ihatethecold I was previously on citalopram, that didn't have any gastro side effects if that helps?
