Getting DD 20mo to swallow medicine

DD is 20 months and we’ve found out today she has a UTI. She needs trimethoprim twice a day, but screams and spits it out every time or jams her tongue in the way so we can’t get the syringe in. She’s too young to understand food bribes although we’ve tried, and she’s got no appetite so isn’t interested in trying it in yoghurt or smoothies.

I’m in tears of exhaustion from 3 days of minimal sleep, covered in loads of spat out wasted medicine, and out of ideas. Anyone have any?

My dd has been on this for nearly 6 months now, she's 19 months. She is on it for her ears though, although she did have a uti last December, so she's had a scan as well but all was clear. I've found a girl much more difficult than my two boys, she's a delicate soul!
Hope you get your dd sorted soon, uti are no fun. A little bit of help I was given by the doc was he worked out her weight related dose of paracetamol then prescribed the 6 plus paracetamol so that when she needed it she literally only needed 2.5 ml.

Ear infections are terrible too, my DS was had ear problems, he’s just been discharged from ENT aged 4 as he had constant infections/perforated ear drums during winter aged 1-3. But he was brilliant at taking medicine and if reluctant he was very easily bribed with a chocolate button.

Good to know about the paracetamol though - DD is tiny for her age, but good to know for when she’s a bit bigger!

Pick her up, lie her on her back on the work surface. When she opens her mouth to shout, syringe the medicine to the back of her throat. She’ll cough and splutter but some will go down, and although it feels mean it really is over very quickly.

My dd was on trimethoprim daily until she was 5 due to urinary tract reflux... we used one of these without any bother, but it mightn't work well if your dd doesn't usually take a dummy
