I was under the impression that brownie groups were for girls of any faith ? Am I wrong ?
I know most take place in church halls but I’d always assumed anyone could join regardless of religion ?

Not sure about a closed sponsored group as they're very rare these days. We're an open sponsored group and we meet in a church hall but we are not religious: we're not allowed to be and I'm an atheist! As a PP has stated the promise now is to "develop my beliefs" and has no mention of god or religion.

Not against Girlguiding policy - this is from the website:

Most units are open to any girl who wishes to join. Some are sponsored, for example by a religious community, hospital or school, but they have no restrictions on membership. A very few ‘closed sponsored units’ restrict membership to a certain group, for example units in residential schools.
We try hard to make sure that there are enough open units in an area to enable all girls to become members, regardless of their faith or the school they attend. In places where there is only one unit, it should be open to all girls and young women who wish to join and who are willing to make the Promise.
If there aren't enough spaces in groups in an area, guiding can sometimes be offered in a flexible way, such as joint units or groups.

"I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the Brownie Guide Law.

A Brownie Guide thinks of others before herself and does a good turn every day."

Does that answer your question about religion?

Fgs ring the leader and askø!

redexpat · 10/12/2018 19:56

That should say ask.

No it’s not against policy. The vast majority of units are for girls of all faiths and none. A small number are sponsored which means they get financial support from a particular place of worship. A much, much smaller number are closed, and as someone said further up they are catering to minority faiths. There are only a handful though so most people won’t come across them ever.

My Brownie Unit is just sponsored, the Guide Unit we feed to is sponsored & closed. The Brownie Unit was meant to be closed, but the person who opened the current Unit after the previous one had to shut messed up the paperwork. Not actually sure about the Rangers...

So yes, we are still out there. Just fairly rare, and as mostly people outside the faith communities don’t think to ask to join the type of Units that are closed, it’s not something people tend to run into. Hence even Girlguiding members trying to insist that it’s not allowed/not possible.

However, even allowing for the Once A Catholic phenomenon; with approximately 10% of the UK population identifying as Catholic, it’s not exactly a “minority faith”...
