Book recommendations for 10 year old girl?

My dd, almost 10 is currently reading through every book by Jacqueline Wilson & whilst she's enjoying them I've noticed a bit of a change in her. Particularly in her own style of writing stories, something she does a lot.

The characters she thinks up & writes about don't appear very nice & seem to make nasty comments to each other.

I know it might not have anything to do with what she's reading but I thought I'd buy some new books for Christmas that have a kinder more gentle vibe.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

dd enjoyed Wonder (R J Palacio) and The London Eye Mystery (Siobhan Dowd) at that sort of age.

She was also given some Milly Molly Mandy books when she was only a little bit younger and I was pleasantly surprised at how much she liked them. They're definitely kinder and more gentle.

You could also try something like the Animal Ark series.

Not sure about kind words in the books but give Robin Stevens a try. Like Agatha Christie for kids :)
Also Podkin (Cant remember the whole title but has a graphic novel that goes with it if that’s of interest)
Wonder is fab roo

Some may seem a bit dated, but they stand the test of time!

  • are you there God, it's me Margaret
  • goodnight Mr Tom
  • when Hitler stole pink rabbit
  • wonder

I like the first 3 suggested by mortifiedmama (I don't know the 4th) and would say ANYTHING by Judy Blume (not Forever, that's about sex!), esp Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing and then Superfudge are both very funny.

The Diamond of Dury Lane is very good (and the first of a series). About an orphan girl who lives in the theatre and solves crimes.

Terry Pratchett wrote some fabulous books for kids. Truckers, and the Wee Free Men and anything with Tiffany Aching in. Tiffany rocks!

Thanks for the suggestions Smile

She has already read Wonder & a couple of Terry Pratchett books. Not sure about Goodnight Mister Tom - maybe in a couple of years.

Will look at Judy Blume next Smile

I had the same problem with Jaquline Wilson - Tracy Beaker is banned here!
David Walliams and Judy Blume are popular with her atm.
She enjoyed Holes and Wonder recently and of course Terry Pratchett.
