I tried to make bake Camembert and it just made an absolute mess in my oven, it dripped everywhere, what did I do wrong?

Did you keep it in its box?

Sexnotgender · 09/12/2018 21:35

You need to take the paper wrapper off, put it back in its box and put it on an oven dish.

It really needs to be in a watertight container - you can buy baking dishes in Lakeland and the like

Bake it in the wooden box wrapped in tin foil. Then it can't drip anywhere.

Even better, slice it horizontally and fill with chopped dried cranberries, chopped apple, a little cinnamon and brown sugar. Put the top back on and put a bit more of the cranberry/apple mix on top too. Delicious.

I use a special dish but you could probably use a small baking dish/tapas dish and foil or baking parchment.
It's lovely with chopped pancetta or chorizo on top prior to baking.
Camembert dish might be cheaper elsewhere

I've got a proper ceramic dish, it's fab and keeps the gooeyness in!

The only thing these days is I find I have to buy a proper baking camembert whereas a few years ago any old camembert would bake!

Take the plastic off.Put it on a tray. Stud with garlic & rosemary or thyme. Heat the oven to 190deg C. Dribble cheese with olive oils and a little honey. Bake for 10 minutes.

Sorry forgot to say...put it back into the wooden/ cardboard carton.

Thanks all
This is what happened, I took all the plastic off and put back in the wooden box, left about 18 mins, was it too long.
Also is it meant to smell quite off before it’s cooked?

It is more fragrant if you leave it past its best before date. I think the ones being sold in the supermarket are less mature. Ours are normally baked when they are a week or so out of date. We use the 99p Aldi ones so nothing special....hence the garlic and herbs.

cricketmum84 · 09/12/2018 21:50

Take it out of the plastic, line the wooden box with baking parchment and pop back in. Drizzle on a little olive oil, crushed garlic and rosemary and pop the lid back on and pop on a tray.

I know you can get special dishes for baking Camembert but I've always managed fine using the wooden box as long as I like it first.

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/12/2018 21:53

Maybe the box wasn't sturdy enough for baking?

I'd wrap in parchment to avoid leakage like that. Put back in box or in a ramekin.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 09/12/2018 21:57

Looks like it's a Le Rustique camembert they bake really well, but the boxes are shite. The bases are card not wood and they just don't hold together.

We have a special ceramic dish like other have mentioned but you really don't need one. Just take the cheese out of the box, remove any wrapping, double wrap it in foil, leaving the top open but making sure the foil sides come up really high above the cheese, put it on a baking sheet and bake for about 20 mins at 200. Yum!

Cranky17 · 09/12/2018 21:58

Ok, thanks, I’ll try wrapping in tin foil and then back in the box, off to scrap cheese of the oven

The box is upside down... that might have contributed!

Cranky17 · 09/12/2018 23:22

is it upside down? There’s card at the bottom though
