FTM here!

When changing nappies do I have to apply sudocream every time?

No

Stillmonday · 09/12/2018 19:35

I didn't think so but it says on baby centre website to apply after every change Confused

Only for a rash and then only a scraping. Sudocream can make nappies less absorbent if I remember right.

A barrier like vaseline I think I used. (It's been a while)

I never have, and have 2 children who never had nappy rash!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 09/12/2018 19:41

No. I used a barrier spray when he was teething becasue for some reason unknown to me his perfectly fine bum went red raw whenever he got a new tooth.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 09/12/2018 19:42

I meant to add that outside of that I never really used any creams. He didn't need it.

Stillmonday · 09/12/2018 19:54

So should I get some other creams just in case?

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/12/2018 19:56

Why do you want to buy more creams? Confused

fedupandlookingforchange · 09/12/2018 19:58

I use sudocream once in the morning and before bed I wash him with cotton wool and water first as he gets a red bottom if I don’t.

SoyDora · 09/12/2018 19:59

Why would you buy other creams? Does he have nappy rash?

wineandcheeseplease · 09/12/2018 20:00

I just use yellow metanium when bum is actually sore and nothing any other time

DoneLikeAKipper · 09/12/2018 20:00

I used to every time with my eldest. Until the day I went to grab a forgotten nappy, in 10 seconds he’d grabbed the pot and started eating it. I only used it when needed after that.

I definitely didn’t spend the rest of the day freaking out and googling the toxicity of Sudocreme/local poisoning units either.

3in4years · 09/12/2018 20:04

I never used any creams and mine never got nappy rash. I think it's because I always change poo nappies instantly.

gamerchick · 09/12/2018 20:05

Acid type poos due to the increased saliva swallowing.

YearOfYouRemember · 09/12/2018 20:06

I used Boots Zinc and castor oil cream and found it much better than Sudocrem. I used washable nappies and put a small amount of cream on most times iirc. (Kids are 13-17 so not clear memories!)

Stillmonday · 09/12/2018 20:07

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat I didn't say I 'wanted' to buy more creams, I was merely asking for advice HmmHmmHmm

ButterflyWitch · 09/12/2018 20:11

You only need to apply cream if they have nappy rash - and only a small amount is needed. I found bums only got a bit red if they hadn't been changed quickly enough after having a poo (eg if they were asleep) but also when they were teething when bums can go really red and sore. Sudocreme was fine most of the time but Metanium is great for the nappy rash they get when teething

ernjas · 09/12/2018 20:12

Only for nappy rash, and I've found sudocrem to be much better than bepanthen/Vaseline.

Twickerhun · 09/12/2018 20:15

Nope. Only get it if you need it and only use it if needed. You can sometimes get free samples of creams which are more than adequate for most normal scenarios

Babdoc · 09/12/2018 20:17

Try to avoid it unless the skin is inflamed or broken with nappy rash.
I just used warm water and cotton wool at each nappy change, and my babies rarely had a problem.
Sudocrem is waterproof and quite hard to clean off again. I’ll never forget the time toddler DD2 managed to smear a ton of it into her hair...!

Mossyhill · 09/12/2018 20:18

Nope, dd rarely has nappy rash, occasionally she gets a sore bum and only then I use a small amount. Probably only for a couple of nappy changes. Soon sorts it out.
She gets a sore neck (milk). I clean and dry her neck and apply a little bit, works well!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/12/2018 20:18

Ok, which people gave. Hmm Put your arsey face away and stop making a drama. It’s bum cream!

Underworld345 · 09/12/2018 20:19

I use a tiny bit of bethanthe at every nappy change. Then if there’s actually a rash, yellow metonium. Don’t use sudocrem at all.

Donthugmeimscared · 09/12/2018 20:20

I was told by the incontinence nurse at work that you should never use it as it stops nappies from absorbing.

Dumbledoresgirl · 09/12/2018 20:21

It was a long time ago now, but I have 4 children and for all of them I used Boots zinc and castor oil cream every nappy change and saved Sudocrem for when their bottoms got a bit red or raw.

I don't know why others are suggesting you are wrong to use something. Have fashions changed? It was perfectly normal to use some sort of barrier cream when mine were babies.
