I just crashed the car

I completely lost control of it. I was turning a corner and a car was coming up the road. I was trying to brake but couldn’t get my foot onto the right pedal. I swerved into the pavement and into a lamppost rather than hit the car. It’s a very quiet road

The car just went on without checking we were ok which totally shocked me. I don’t know if I just didn’t see it or if it was speeding and so was suddenly there

But what bothers me the most is I have no idea why I couldn’t brake, I just couldn’t get my foot to move. I can’t imagine feeling safe to drive again

That does sound grightening. Have you got someone to come and sit with you?

kittenfun · 09/12/2018 16:53

Oh Hun!!
That must have been so scary !!
Hope you are ok

redsummershoes · 09/12/2018 16:56

wrong pedal Shock

you are lucky that you didn't hurt or kill a pedestrian!

it's a shock, but might lead to you becoming a more careful driver

Almahart · 09/12/2018 16:59

That’s why I’m in shock. I’ve been driving safely for thirty years with no accident ever.

So if it could happen to me it could happen to anyone

OP posts:
Almahart · 09/12/2018 17:00

And obviously I know someone could have been hurt

I wonder how you think you would feel if it had happened to you

OP posts:
Extrastout · 09/12/2018 17:00

Were you going too fast to take the corner or why did you need to brake?

MayFayner · 09/12/2018 17:01

Glad you are ok OP.

Are you an experienced driver? Do you think you had some sort of cramp in your foot?

MayFayner · 09/12/2018 17:01

Sorry xpost

Almahart · 09/12/2018 17:02

I was going slowly it’s a 20 mph zone but a car was suddenly at the top of the street - and didn’t stop when I swerved

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2018 17:02

Was it confusion as to which pedal was which? Or could you not move your foot as you wanted?
Have you had any other similar things?

Almahart · 09/12/2018 17:03

So they didn’t slowdown at all and then drove straight off after

OP posts:
Almahart · 09/12/2018 17:03

Just couldn’t move my foot. Never ever had anything like this before

OP posts:
Processedpea · 09/12/2018 17:04

Accidents are just that accidents hope you're all ok

Twickerhun · 09/12/2018 17:04

I can’t beleive they drove off - that’s shocking
Hope you feel better soon. Maybe look into a driving course to get your confidence back?

donajimena · 09/12/2018 17:04

What shoes were you wearing? I've had a near miss wearing chunky boots before.

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2018 17:05

How old are you?

Almahart · 09/12/2018 17:06

49!! A careful middle aged driver with no accidents ever before

I was hit by a lorry a few years ago . Police attended

I had to make an initial statement. At the time I couldn’t remember much at all but it all came back to me . The police said this why they take an initial statement.

So you are probably in shock. . So give yourself time.

JuniperBeer · 09/12/2018 17:20

My sister did something similar a couple of years ago. However when she said she couldn’t brake using the pedal she pulled up her hand brake. She ended up in the middle of the (quiet) road but better than in the ditch that rang alongside.

Get someone to take you out, pootle around some quiet roads. Check your mats. Find out if it was just fear or did your foot slip? What shoes were you wearing? Did you just panic? Sit in your car, with engine off and move your feet around. Go for a little drive. Don’t leave it ages do it as soon as you can. Take someone with you.

Unfortunately we cannot predict how we'll react in an emergency/traumatic situation.

Most know about fight or flight but there's also freeze. It's VERY hard to overcome instinctive responses but it may be useful to take some defensive driving lessons and perhaps some therapy?

I speak as someone who goes into fight mode when I'm 5'2" middle aged unfit woman who has no business taking on burglars, muggers etc but I have done - stupid! Then after it hits me how stupid and I throw up!

My ex mil is a freezer and she took defensive driving classes for exactly same reason as she had a blowout and didn't handle it right. Luckily nobody hurt but it bothered her so she looked into remedies and that's what she did.

luckylavender · 09/12/2018 17:23

It could be that the other car spooked you. Doesn't sound good if they drove off.

Aintnon · 09/12/2018 17:24

Did the other driver not keep to his side of the road? Or why did you have to brake for him?

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2018 17:25

Well I was thinking mini stroke but a pp mentioned MATS and I think that's much more likely. I've had similar and it was scary, luckily for me it ended fine. I think my heel got stuck under a rsised corner of the mat.

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2018 17:26

And as it happened I didn't know wtf was going on if you see what I mean

Delatron · 09/12/2018 17:27

Was the car on the wrong side of the road? Sounds like you froze and couldn’t react.

Be kind to yourself, you’re probably in shock.
