Any MNers in Paris? I'm going next week. Should I worry?

I've got a thread running in Travel about what to see and do but I wondered if we had anyone living in Paris who could advise with regard to how troubled the whole city is at the moment.
I'm scheduled to arrive next weekend for a few days. Will I be confined to my hotel?

It's not the protesters I'd be worried about to be honest, OP. Be very careful.

Husband is from Paris but live here.

www.paris.fr/actualites has list of things closed in French by day. The tripadviser Paris forum has reports from people there now.

palomapear · 09/12/2018 17:25

@Aquilla are you referring to terrorism?

Thanks penguin very useful.

I had a look at the Tripadvisor forum yesterday. I couldn't find anything specific but I will look again

Yes, and general crime. I wouldn't be tripping about on my own late at night the way I might in other places. But that's probably me being paranoid.

Tiscold · 09/12/2018 17:32

I wouldn't go depending on what you want to see and do. Eg this weekend most tourist attractions were closed.

Personslly i wouldn't risk the chance of getting caught up in as who knows what could happeb

palomapear · 09/12/2018 17:41

Are you based in Paris?

Is your hotel refundable? If say train isn't but hotel is might be worth taking train somewhere else very good train service to other parts of France, cities like Brussels. If not maybe try places like Fontainebleau though check first. Versailles seemed to be closed though looks like varies day to day.

palomapear · 09/12/2018 18:04

DH is there for work, his first time, and we have to show up to a function related to that. It's not ideal timing but there you go!
I was thinking if it was in London then there would still be fairly safe/ interesting places to go.
Or maybe this week things would calm down ?
I've nerve problems fancied a city break but this wasn't my reasoning.

I live just outside Paris but had to go in yesterday for a work thing. It was fine, we were in the 17th, we had lunch outside, lots of sirens going off, a few gilet jane wandering around but it didn't feel dangerous in any way. It will all depend where you are staying next weekend - if your hotel is anywhere near the Champs Elysee then I would try and change it to be completely honest. The other issue is that some museums and attractions were closed this weekend, but not everything. The French news last night had an item about all the tourists going to Versailles so there will be things to do, you just might need to be more selective.

LaDaronne · 09/12/2018 18:11

I live here. What frozentree said.

winnybella · 09/12/2018 18:16

Yes, what frozentree said. It’ll be fine, in any case it would only be Saturday that could potentially be problematic, just stay away from the 1st/8th arr if possible.

Aquilla Hmm

Elfontheshelfiswatchingyoutoo · 09/12/2018 19:10

Isn't macron speaking this week hopefully offer something to them

LaDaronne · 09/12/2018 19:17

frozentree are you a member of ESM Paris? Just wondering if I know you IRL ;-)

rockingthelook · 09/12/2018 21:18

Went there last weekend, kept away from the Champs Elysee area on Saturday, however the trouble had extended to the Tuileries and Musee D'Orsay areas so we had a bit of a trial finding a metro station that hadn't been locked off, there were gilets jaunes everywhere, thick black smoke from burning items, tear gas, lots of traffic, sirens etc, however what I will say is that we didn't feel threatened by the protesters, just wanted to get away from it all. Still adore Paris though, great place!

frozentree · 10/12/2018 08:37

LaDaronne Seeing how I don't know what ESM Paris is I think it's unlikely! I've been out in the wilds of the 78 for about 15 years though so we have may have crossed paths if you're anywhere in the west of Paris.

LaDaronne · 10/12/2018 08:46

fair enough! I remember you used to live out in the sticks. ESM is the FB group English speaking mums in Paris.

footballcrazy11 · 10/12/2018 08:50

My son went this weekend and had a lovely time, stayed right next to the tower and had coffee on the Champs Elysees.
I would say go and have a great trip.
