working for the Royals USA style

With all the hoo ha about staff leaving. I do ponder whether it is a new broom sweeping clean. The american style of e-mailing uber early in the morning and being more demanding is all very well. But how well paid are the Royal Staff.

So if they want more out of their staff should they be paying more.

I say this because I worked for an American boss, e-mails through the night were his thing. he would be checking your work at godawful hours and spitting out instructions. I would turn the phone off at night or the pings would wake me. The upside of this was the salary was excellent, the holiday entitlement not good though.

I reckon they will have to pay more and find young staff not indoctrinated in the civil servant way of doing things.

Let's see how this thread goes... Wink

We are not in America though, and our Royal Family (RF) is not American and nor are we, the people. From what I've seen and experienced, the US culture is not one I want to join.

My view is that if you move to a different country it is your responsibility to understand and accommodate that culture. Create your own 'living space' within it by all means, but don't expect everyone else to change to accommodate you.

I think treating people with respect and paying them well is probably the way to go.

The latest person to leave was supposed to be going six months ago, but agreed to stay on for another while to help the DoS settle in. There's no story, it's just been twisted to make it look like their household is hemorrhaging staff.

That being said she's clearly a very driven and ambitious person with high standards. It can be difficult working with people who you consider aren't holding themselves to the same standards as you do for yourself.

Cities I tend to agree, the employment laws do protect us to a certain extent in the UK, if you work long hours you deserve the salary though. I seem to recall that the money working for the firm is not great though.

Found jobs, salaries not mentioned though.

I’m sorry I’m clearly being dim but I have no idea what you’re all talking about Confused

Are you saying you think now there’s an American in the royal family there might be an expectation on royal staff to adhere to American working practices?

TwitterQueen1 · 09/12/2018 17:41

Yes Diana
I work for a global IT company and have daily communication with our US team. Warning: huge generalisations follow: we (Europeans) tend to find them very rude. So where I might say "It would be great if I could have that, thanks." - meaning I need that pdq, Americans would say "I need that by end of business today." (They don't believe in giving you time. If they text you they expect an immediate - and I mean immediate - reply). And when Americans would say "I'd appreciate your input on this, what they really mean is fuck you I'm going to completely ignore everything you say and we'll do it my way."

We (the UK) are totally and utterly insignificant to them but they know they have to go through the motions.

TwitterQueen1 · 09/12/2018 17:44

I should also say I love the US and I think Americans have very many lovely qualities but I would not want to work there.

Coffeebean76 · 09/12/2018 18:26

That’s not my experience of working with Americans at three different US companies at all. I don’t think you can generalise.

tiredgranny · 09/12/2018 20:38

Mad mum I worked there 20 years ago and was on 10k but I lived in so all my wages was spending money.

It was a experience but RF do the same every year

@TwitterQueen1 thanks.

In that case, no. Why would an American marrying into the British Royal Family import working practices? If chelsea Clinton married a British actor the reverse wouldn’t happen, be expected, or even thought about.
